I went and got three rolls of Van Buren dollars. Two rolls were fine and one has odd edge lettering. It looks like the lettering has been double stuck in some way. You can see it in GOD. Any ideas? The coin on top is the Dbl stamped The coin on bottom is perfect lettering. I think the pics are good enough to see this but they could be better. Thanks for any help. Mike.
Mike, Welcome to Coin Talk and I hope you will stay! It appears that the coin was run through the edge Stamping Mill twice and since the coin is turning on rollers, some slippage is inevitable which would account for the Double Stamped Edge lettering. There are some Collectors out there that collect these type of Edge Errors and will pay a premium for them. I really depends on how much of the lettering is doubled for how much of a premium that these Error Coins will fetch! There are somewhat similar Doubled Edge Lettering errors known on the Presidential Dollars but your's may be somewhat unique and different from the others! You might want to PM or email Mike Diamond, President of Coneca (Mike is a Member of Coin Talk as well) or contact Ken Potter at www.koinpro.com and see what they have to say. Frank
It looks good to me from what I can see in the pictures. Two nearly perfectly centered passes through the edge lettering mill.
Hi And, This is essentially what machine doubling damage looks like on the edge. If you understand the way that the letters are added, you would know that it is virtually impossible for this to happen. A coin basically runs down a pathway that becomes more narrow until the diameter of the coin reaches the die that imparts the lettering. It's a one way trip, it goes through and that's that. The only way that true doubled lettering happens is when a bin of coins accidentally gets run through the entire process twice. When that happens, it is virtually impossible for the lettering to line up just a fraction of a millimeter away from the original lettering. A little vibration as the coin is rolling through the edge lettering machine is all it would take to cause what you see in the picture. Thanks, Bill
Bill, You may be right but I have never heard of Machine Doubling from running a coin through a Roller Press Machine! As quite a few if these type of errors have shown up, maybe Mike Diamond can shed some light on the subject and cause. I edited and cropped the top picture and have attached it, so that everyone can get a better look at the doubling on the Edge Letters. Frank
Thanks Frank. That now shows what I am talking about alot better. I ordered a pic takeing microscope so hopefully I will have some vert detailed pics real soon. Mike
Hello Bill, I don't have a good understanding of how the edge lettering machine works. Could you refer me to a picture or could you possibly draw a simple sketch of the die & how the coin passes through? Very best regards, collect89
