1794 Lcc S-28

Howdy fellow coin peeps,

I picked up another Liberty Capped Cent recently:









It's a 1794 S-28 Ornate Head Variety (with edge lettering) and while it's got problems, which is normal with my early coppers, it's got good detail and I'd be happy to have the entire series with this much detail and the problems she's got and for the price I paid for her.

Well, I like the obverse. But, the poor reverse is just about gone alltogether. Still, thats one more Liberty Capped cent than I have.

Nice toad. And I think with the coin in hand you could probably see more details, some times feint details can be seen in hand, but not picked up by pictures.

 

The reverses are almost always weak. The design/engraving wasn't as strong as the obverse and that's why you see so many with no reverse whatsoever.

Cool, I like it even though it's in such a shape. I would take one in any condition.

 

Toad was the coin in the ground , or did they just use bad copper on them early cents .

That's why I'm looking for a 1/2 cent , they're cheaper .

Bad copper, rusted dies and yes this coin could have been in the ground - lots of reasons, but toad is correct about the reverses. You see some coins with nice obverses, but worn smooth on the reverse. Some of the pitting you see on these puppies come from rusted dies. One of the reasons I was so stunned at the reverse of the 1795 I have. I actually bought this coin because of the reverse.

 

I'm not certain on this one. It's exactly like I bought it and while I can see pitting, that could have occured without it being in the ground. It also weighs 13.2 grams and normal weight is 13.5 grams, give or take, and when a coin is in the ground, it's apt to lose weight due to electrolysis and .3 grams isn't a sufficient loss for a ground find (normally speaking). So I think she's just one beat up gal.

And Mark that 1795 is stunning...I want one that great in my collection!

 

I am not sure I could afford one with the obverse matched this reverse. To me the obverse is maybe F and the reverse is vf20/30. Oh well love the coin - if you want to see some really nice ones check out this site http://www.earlycents.com/. I browser shop there often - just to dream.

 

The more I look at it the better it looks , Toad hint hint , I hear Christmas is coming .
