Ok I have counted and recounted and recounted. I’ve had other people look at this and they see the same thing.

Looking at the 2017 New Jersey quarter, it appears the American flag the young immigrant is waving has at least 14 stripes instead of 13.

should my second grade teacher have failed me for my math skills or did the designer or engraver get it wrong?

Don’t look at it once and dismiss it. Take a careful look before telling me to get new glasses. Which I just did. Thirteen. You may be drawing an 'optical conclusion' from the engraving.

I see thirteen as well. I think the top edge you are counting as a stripe.

It was/is a poor depiction of the flag and leaves a question in my mind as to why it was portrayed this way.

Remember, this is a tiny design element on a quarter. If they added stars it would be impossible for them to strike up. I think its a pretty good design for its size and manufacturing considerations.

I don't think DC existed when the original flag was designed. ~ Chris

Nah! The only thing Doug helped with was opening the kegs :hungover: at the street party at Matt Kane's on 14th Street in D.C. on St. Patty's Day in 1801. ~ Chris ;)

It didn't. When DC came into existence the flag had 15 stripes. (If had 15 stripes from 1795 to 1818.) The idea of setting up the seat of government in its own district came about in 1790 and land for the district was carved out of Maryland and Virginia. The district was finally made separate from the two states in 1801. People pushing today for Washington DC to become a state are forgetting why it was created in the first place. So that the seat of the Federal Government would not be under the control of a state. The District is independent of any state and is actually under the authority of the Congress.

I thought I saw 15, but considered that was the top and bottom "edges". Fun fact, the license plates in DC have a motto "End Taxation Without Representation"
