My mother in law gave me a box of coins to go through. So far here is my list. I'm new at this game so be patient. Anything on the list look interesting? Her grandfather was a railroad worker near the Catskills so there are also a bunch of foreign coins that I'll list soon enough. Most of them are tarnished but undamaged. Take a look: 1 Cent Coin - 1851 (1) Pennies -Indianead - 1862 (2), 1876 (1), 1878 (1), 1879 (1), 1880 (1), 1882 (1), 1883 (1), 1887 (1), 1888 (2), 1889 (1), 1890 (3), 1891 (1), 1893 (1), 1894 (1), 1897 (2), 1899 (1), 1900 (1), 1901 (1), 1902 (1), 1903 (1), 1904 (1), 1905 (1), 1906 (1), 1907 (1), 1908 (1), Pennies -Lincoln - 1910 (1), 1918 (3), 1919 (2), 1920 (3), 1922 (1), 1926 (1), 1927 (3), 1928 (1), 1929 (1), 1934 (1), 1935 (3), 1936 (1), 1937 (1), 1938 (1), 1939 (1), 1941 (1), 1942 (3) 2 Cent Coin - 1865 (2), 1867 (1) III Coin - 1865 (1) Nickels - 1867 (5), 1901 (1), 1937 (1) Dimes - 1838 (1), 1851 (1), 1854 (2), 1856 (1), 1902 (1) Quarters - 1840 (1), 1856 (1) Half Dollars - 1854 (1), 1858 (1), 1925 (1) Dollar Coins - 1878 (1) - 8 tailfeathers, 1921 (1), 1923 (1) Dollar Bill - 1923 (1)
Welcome to CoinTalk. Your 1922 Lincoln Cent may be valuable. Post some pics so the Lincoln experts can give their opinions. Does your 1867 Nickel have Rays on the reverse? If so, it could be valuable. Depending on the design and condition your 1838 Dime may be valuable. Please post pics. There were no Walking Liberty Half Dollars minted in 1925 so I assume your 1925 Half Dollar is a Commemorative Half. Can you tell us which Commem it is or, better yet, post a pic? You did not mention mintmarks for any of your coins? Do any of them have mintmarks?
I couple of your Indian Head Cent dates are fairly desirable too. Both the 1876 and 1878 are among the nicer dates in the set. Nothing too valuable, but depending on condition could be worth some...I'd say if they are undamaged but worn...probably around $30 each. Also, with the 1908, look on the reverse side just below the wreath. Do you see an S there? If so, your coin was minted in San Francisco and is also desirable. It will likely not have anything there at all (meaning the coin was minted in Philadelphia). Look for an S like in this picture: Also, with the 1921 dollar. Is it the Morgan design (like the 1878) or is it the Peace design (like the 1923)?
Get Ready!! Once you do the research to find out what you have, You'll fall in love with this hobby too! Next thing you need to do is find a coin club in your area to attend. At mine we have auctions every week, which is a great opportunity to get some neat stuff! Happy hunting!
How do you guys get such good pics. Here's what i have so far. The two 5 cent pieces on the left have the stars with rays and the two on the right don't. It appears the one with rays are silvere in color and the other are copper in color.
Most newer digital cameras have this function. It allows you to take pictures of the coins up close without them being blurry...but the camera must be held very still.
That's not his problem. He is unable to get in tight on the coins (or at least that appears to be the case in his photo). Once he is able to take macro photos camera stability will become an issue.
I'll have to search the Macro functionability on our Sony DSC-W55, unless someone can tell me. Here are a few more pics. Any idea what these tiny Pennies are? They are about 1/2 the size of a dime.
That was what I was saying. Once you get your settings changed to macro you need to be very careful with stability. I have struggled with that from day 1.
the tiny ones may be trinkets mass produced to look like regular coinage, but smaller. hard to say from the pics. Can you put the cam up to a loupe and take a pic?
If your 1865 3 cent is silver it could be worth something also. The Catskills Mountains are an hour south of me. Your mother in laws grandfather was lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area.
hinchcliff to the forum.. Try this site, it's for your camera. Go to page 15, it tells you how to set your macro. http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCW55_EN_ES.pdf Also I use a loop in front of my lens, I have a Sony DSC-50. Here's a sample with a loop.
Hi welcome to CT! are there any mint marks on your 1926 or 1922? actually.. are there mint marks on any of them? The macro mode will look like a little flower on your camera. And RockDude.. your sony. I think its the same one I have.. why do you hold a loupe in front of it? I find the Macro mode works wonders.
I don't have my lighting set up yet, as a matter of fact I'm still trying to figure out what to do. With the loupe I can hold the camera further away from the coin letting more light in.
A couple wacky coins I found are tokens from the railways back then and a Green River Whisky token. I even found a Freemason coin (he was a freemason). Pretty cool stuff. I'll try my Macro out tonight.
