Nowadays coins really aren't worth tracking since their monetary values are so low. It hasn't always been like this, of course. Why did putting serial numbers on coins never catch on back when the face values of coins were much more significant? Did the US Government see this as unrealistic?
It's anybody's guess. Just think of how difficult and impractical that would be. With the enormous amount of coins produced each year, where would they find the space to fit the serial number after the 100,000th, One millionth, one billionth coin is produced. Even if it was on the edge, imagine the machinery needed to do it. I'm questioning myself why I'm replying to the question. Probably just trying to be polite. lol
I could see it now.. I website called Fancy Serial Numbers on Coins.. and a buch a newbies asking.. is this fancy serial number on my coin worth anything?
