when i first saw the commercial on tv i made the joke to my wife that if it were a John McCain coin it would be sold for $19.95 and not a measly 9.95 :D

Will this thing go down when I flush or will I have to look at repeatedly as I urinate on it?

If you have a coin on a president it should honor his greatest achievements.

Negligible is correct. Not much gold is used. The metal is so malleable it can be produce sheets of gold foil. So, how much gold on these coins? 1/10th of a pennyweight? 1/100 of a penny weight? 1/1000th of a gram? Less? More?

Google Barack Obama coins and you'll find quite a few. All collector's items I'm sure.

We like these at the shop as it helped us clear out a lot of idle inventory. At least one company will be using the Washington Dollars for these as they posted a buy of $1.20. We had 2900 and shipped them 2800 of them.

Now Illinois quarters are getting hot. Guess what we'll be dumping next.

I wouldn't buy anything that is not official U.S. Mint. Even then I rarely do.
It's a matter of time before people start walking in the door with these expecting good money for them.
As with other "TV bought" items they'll be disappointed.

Someone has a bad case of the 'Waaahs' going on :) I am sure the US mint will do a better job...oh wait...its the US mint...these are probably the best you will get :) I would wait for the inaugural medal, they all get one of those regardless of what they have done, even G-dub...and they are almost always very well done.

I wouldn't consider buying a painted medal, coin or anything commercially sold as an investment.

I figured out the spot price for one of these coins:
    8.1 gm total weight
    88.5% copper - current value $0.0264
    6% zinc - current value $0.000562
    3.5% manganese - current value $0.00123
    2% nickel - current value $0.00155

    Total value - $0.0298

Of course this doesn't count the value of the gold plating or the paint.

I certainly don't like them, but HSN is selling them by the thousands. I noticed that SHOPNBC has also started, but don't sell them on their show "Coin Shoppe", but on a show only for presidental stuff. Amazing how many people are buying these. I've seen old Ike buttons for sale on e-bay, but I don't remember what kind of prices they had. But these coins are different, they will be around in the thousands 50 or 60 years from now. I hope buyers aren't buying them because they think they will become a good investment.

I can't think of any other reason why they would buy them....
