Glad to read the mint wants to start making a better product. Been saving my pennies and hope to get one. It will be my first gold. I think W mint is for proof.

    good question

If I'm wrong... someone please correct me.

From my understanding, I'd say neither. A quote from the mint...
"Additionally, a small border was added for a more consistent edge. The 2009 coin will be made of 24-karat gold. Pure 24-karat gold is much more malleable than 22-karat or 90% gold coins, making it better material for striking the ultra high relief."

THe coin will not be offered in a proof version. It will be offered in a bullion/unc version. Now the mint does make a distinction between bullion and UNC coins - the unc one has the mint mark and the bullion does not. I believe this will be of bullion format. Either way, it will be unc condition and not proof.

Anyone care to place a wager on mint totals and price growth for this coin over the years?

I'm going to buy one, but if the minting winds up being smaller that expected maybe I should order another, I don't have a clue how this is going to go. I realize they are by demand, so serveral things could happen with this one year issue.

    1. Massive interest and a huge mintage.
    2. Gold goes up and this decreases demand and lowers the mintage.
    4. Gold supplies at the mint get depleted causing??????
    5. The horrible economy decrease demand and the mintage winds up being rather low.
    6. The horrible economy increases demand and the mintage is high.

Any thing else to speculate on?

Or the government decides that all gold belongs to the American people, aka, the government; and doesn't sell these things, but calls in all gold ala 1933 once again.

I wish the mint would produce some of these old designs to the original specifications for gold and silver content instead of going with the .9999 fad.

They cancelled many of the products, so I'm not sure about any additions.
Rumor also has it that the '09 Au double eagle will only be minted for 1 year and maybe in Pd the following year

What, I'd like to see are new designs and new designs with old themes
(i.e. liberty, Natives etc). IMO, it's time to allow the 'new and next
    generation' to shine.

I also wonder what will happen with the GAE going into 2010, if the decide to continue the double eagle?
