Quarantining boredom has turned me into a coin collector and I found an interesting error on some 2020 P Weir Farm ATB quarters from a mint bag. This error was present on 9 or so in the bag. Is this just a die gouge or is it some other error? I tried to get some closeups with different lighting and apologies for the subpar lighting. Thanks in advance for the education, I'm new to this and looking to learn!
Looks like a scene from autumn and the leaves are falling. It's a mint error known as a die chip. They are fun to find, nice to have but they are not worth any costs associated with the coin. It's only worth face value, maybe a buck extra to a collector of those. Welcome to CT.
I'm not even sure that it is a die chip. It's in an odd place where you might not expect a die chip to occur. Usually, they will form where two different surfaces of a coin meet. Since the OP has nine of them, it could be a die dent. @ekg85 - Is the anomaly raised completely above the surface of the field or is it just the portion to the northeast? Thanks for the greetings! @cpm9ball - At first looking through the microscope I was almost certain it was raised. I've studied it through a 10x loupe and now I am not so sure. It looks like the center portion rises slightly above the field, but the northeast portion of the anomaly may actually dip below the surface of the field. I've added a few more images under the scope with the coin at a slight angle. Any thoughts? I appreciate your input!
If you have 9 of them that are exactly alike, then it is impossible for it to be PMD and it is unlikely to be a die dent if only part of it is recessed. Here are a couple of my favorite die chips that I have kept in my collection. Note that they both are raised completely above the fields. I know it's in an unusual place but finding that many in 1 bag is a lot so I went with a die chip. It also has the look from what I can see. I didn't see anything to let me think otherwise.
