Counterfeit 1928 Peace Dollar

At a coin show yesterday I bought several counterfeit coins to add to my collection. (See my other threads for the other counterfeit coins.)

This 1928 Peace Dollar should fool NO ONE. For one thing, at 21.95 g it is almost 18% lighter than a genuine Peace Dollar at 26.73 g.

I have not studied this coin carefully yet but I suspect it to be cast and possibly made of a lead-mixture or possibly pot metal. The coin was plated or covered with a silvery material at one point to give it the appearance of a genuine silver coin but most of that material has worn away. This silvery material is still evident in many places, especially on the reverse.

The font of the lettering appears all wrong, especially on the obverse in the motto 'IN GOD WE TRVST'. I am no expert on Peace Dollars but the lettering appears more bold (higher relief) than on a genuine Peace Dollar (except, perhaps, the 1921 High Relief). The details in Liberty are lacking.

The coin has three rims on the obverse and one, really wide rim on the reverse.

In case you missed it, this coin is a FAKE!

I'd make a substantial wager that you have a Chinese product. They are very frequently 22g +/- a tad, and wide rims are another trademark.

You may be right. I had not thought of that. I don't have any Chinese counterfeit Peace Dollars to compare to. I need to pick up a few reference pieces.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Also as a note. Original 28 peace dollars: The 8 has alot smaller top than the bottom. Ther is also a nice curl in the top of the 2.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for. I know very little about these coins as I do not collect silver dollars.

Is the surface of the coin quite porous like you would see with a cast counterfeit? The reason I ask is it is hard to tell from the photos, I think whatever the plating was that wore off the coin made it ugly and hard to tell. The surface looks rough...but is that due to casting or the plating wearing off in your opinion Hobo?

Nice photos, Hobo, and thanks for posting that fake. I believe it is a transfer die forgery made from some heavily recut dies. Look at the eagle's eye and feather design, they are all wrong and clearly due to some reworking of the die. Normally, I would expect a fake to have even mushier details than a genuine Peace dollar, but in this one they are much sharper (as already pointed out) which should be a tipoff to this type of fake in the future.

Yes. The plating covered some of it - but not all of it.

Especially the reverse , never seen the lettering so well struck on a real Peace dollar , wish our Peace dollars were struck so good .

The letters in "GOD" aren't level at all, and the N in "ONE" on the reverse is huge...or the E is tiny. Those are my two cents, at least = )
