Great story, amazing collection. I've often thought about a type set but just haven't gotten there yet. I've never seen a slab label holder like that but if your going to crack the slabs saving the holders are a great idea. Envious!

What grade is this $3 gold coin? Seems to be going cheap!

It may well go higher in the last few seconds as snipes come in.

Most collectors are probably reluctant to buy a $3 raw from blurry photos. Even out of focus, I can see what looks like discoloration and damage to the rim at top and bottom, and significant scratches. And that's without being able to tell whether it's real or not.

I'd like to have a $3 type example, but I'm too cheap. This example doesn't tempt me in the slightest.

Good eye! I didn't see the discoloration and damage. Slight, but there. How would that affect the grade? It's much better than FINE according to the ANA guide. And VF is listed at $850 in the red book.
    I'm not buying, just learning.

I'll do you a favor and then make my comment. The DANSCO gold page has been out of print for many years. On the few occasions that it shows up on Ebay the prices start at north of seventy dollars. Many people here are looking for it so if you truly have given up on the 7070 set you could sell it here. Not to me because I refuse to pay extravagant prices for something that originally sold for $6. Now for my comment. Completing the 7070 set in lower grades is just as fun as those high grade skeleton collections. In lower grades you might actually COMPLETE the set. What a concept complete versus skeleton. I know what I prefer. You decide for yourself what to do obviously.

I have low confidence judging $3 gold, but I have complete confidence that that coin isn't gradable. Problem coins bring much lower prices than problem-free examples.

But even holed $3 gold is generally too rich for my blood.

My plan is high grade for coins I can afford, lower grades for those I can't.
I spent a couple of hours yesterday adding easy to find, later date, high grade coins to start my type set, from one ebayer. After all that, it turned out he was a complete and utter A-hole, so I told him to shove it and deleted my cart.

I honestly feel that crack in the model slabs kind of makes it pointless I'm getting it slapped but I understand why people would do it to me it's not wrong to do it if your into thing but me personally I'm not

Great retelling of your experience - I've never cracked out a coin, and you confirm what I thought - not a good idea!
