Hi guys, I have a rough estimate as to a market value for these, But your grade, and Price opinions are welcome! I would love to hear what a more knowledgeable person on these coins has to say.

I find gold to be very difficult to grade but I'll take a stab at these:

    1857 $1 - AU-53
    1888 $5 - AU-50
    1886 $10 - EF-45
1898-S $20 - MS-63 (maybe even MS-64 if not too many marks on Liberty's face - I can't tell if that's a hit on her eyebrow or not)

Does that mean that I am not even close?

I don't know. The hits on the eyebrow, and cheek are pretty bad, and I graded it at MS 62. Like I said before though... This is not my area in numismatics, so my opinion really shouldn't be trusted all that much.
But its a comfort that our grades are close, with the exception of the 20 Dollar piece, everything else was bang on.

Snaz I think your grade of 62 was right on , they're all nice coins , now I just need the dollar and twenty . Are you gonna work on the Indian , St. Gaudens next very pretty and no dollar .

I am terrible at grading gold, but I'll give it a shot:

    1886 $10, XF details cleaned
    1898-S $20, MS-60
    1882 $5, AU-50...possible old cleaning
    1857 $1, AU...also looks cleaned

I'm fairly sure that the 1886 has been cleaned. The other 2, they appear to have been but it might also be the lighting in the photos. Again, I am terrible with these so I could be way off.

Grading is much more forgiving for large gold coins as far as hits. That's why I graded it at least 63.

I'm glad to know we agree on the others.

AH I see. Probably because of how soft it is eh?
makes sense. So I guess even if my grading was somewhat accurate, it was still uneducated ;)

Yes, they are a bit more forgiving because they are soft. I'm not sure if that's just the TPG grading scales or if ANA is the same way.

One question guys , why did they bite gold coins , 1. is it soft enogh to bite , or as I believe lead is soft enough to bite thus if it makes an imprint it's fake ie, gold plated lead , real gold is too hard to bite thus real . Anybody know .

They bit them to see if they were soft. If they left tooth marks - fake.

That is correct, real gold is too hard. Lead plated is soft enough to bite and leave marks.

    1898-s looks scratched.

1882 $5 looks like Grafitti. Looks to me like someone wrote thier name in the field in front of the eye.

I was gonna say (in order of pictures)
    45
    60 scratched
    45 grafitti
    50

    But I guess that's why I don't grade for a living.....
