Picked this one up today at the local Coin Show. I have dealers actually watching for these for me now and when I walk in they start yelling my name. LOL..
Nice I love the late die state with the elongated stars and that die crack through the lettering on the reverse is cool too . rzage
Mark, it is indeed a O-109b R4 coin. I have been fortunate in the past few days at picking up several R4's at what I think are bargain prices. snagged this one for $100. Either the market is getting really soft of the dealer need cash here. Also picked up a nice 1834 O-118 which is also an R4. Watch the shows. 90% of the dealers have no idea what an overton number is and cherry picking is a breeze. (If you can remember what to look for that is without carrying around a 10 pound book.) LOL..
Jim: I bring my Overton to the shows, and just ask if they mind if I check it to see if I need the piece.
MY dealer checks them before pricing them, but does not list them. Then he lets me use his book to attribute them myself - I asked him to save me time, but his comment was - "That takes away some of your fun." He was right. I still think that 1806/9 I got from them was incorrectly identified for the price. Yeah - the coin was not as nice as yours, but still the variety brings some dollars. Even some of the worst ones are not priced as this one was.
That is a nice appealing 1809 half Dollar. (or, to use that awful word, quite "crusty"). Nice purchase!
discuss grade & Overton number. Hello Jim M, About how many different BHD have you assembled so far? I'd like to see more pictures depicting your BHD collection. Very best regards, collect89
Jim: I also picked up two pieces this weekend. Nothing interesting, just two lower grade pieces, R-1's that I needed. Kinda following in Ben's footsteps, and trying to keep the price below $100 each.
I have enough to apply for the BHNC but not really something at this point in my life that I feel a need to do. Keep in mind that I was buying these back in the 70's as well. Some that I have I paid $4.00 for. : )
Frank, thats precisely what I have been attempting to do as well. Want to see how many varieties I can get before I hit the wall so to speak. So far so good. I have a tough time finding ones that I like or that are not beat to death. Now the dealers are watching for me as well so that helps. The state show is this coming weekend, have to see what I can find there now. BHD's are a ton more fun then most everything else that I collect because of the hunt and the challenges involved in finding them. I have a couple of sets of Morgans and Peace Dollars that I am thinking about letting go so I can keep playing with the Busties. I see Morgans by the truck loads at shows, funny that dealers tell me that they generally sell a few Morgans at each show. I see a showcase with them in it and I just walk past now. No interest at all in them.
He is doing pretty good Hobo. His collection currently is 142 Die States/Marriages with a total of 154 Bust Halves and it's continually growing. He is hanging out with a number of other members here at CT in the coinzip.com forum. Stop by and check it out sometime, I am sure Ben would like to see ya.
Jim, What has happened that Bone hasn't posted on C.T since August?? We all miss him, his knowledge and his joking around! I hope that to be a member of the Bust Half Nut Club, you don't have to give up other Forums such as Coin Talk! That would be like the rule in the Salvation Army where a man member has to marry a woman member! I have seen quite a few of the ladies collecting donations and that is downright scary! Frank Frank
Nice!! Very nice addition! I only have one BHD, probably my favorite piece in my collection (certainly the oldest!). It's one of my first pieces, too! Little bit of toning, as well
