Since it doesn't have a value as part of the design, and the seller doesn't claim that it is a US coin, there probably isn't anything really wrong with the auction. I don't think anyone would be fool enough to bid thinking it is real. But, then again...

 

Well, of the Small Eagle silver Draped Bust coins only the Half Dollar had its denomination indicated on the reverse. The Half Dollar had "1/2" at the bottom of the reverse. The Half Dime, Dime (was it still called a "Disme" then?), Quarter Dollar and Dollar had no denomination indicated on the reverse. The Dollar had its denominations indicated via edge lettering.

So the absense of a denomination alone on the coin in the auction is not an indication of a counterfeit.

Different knot in the hair ribbon.

Different chin and nose.

Slight breast reduction!

Ooops! Same number of stars BUT the last star on the left side on the real one is alongside the lowest hair curl, the stars on the suspect one stop far above the last hair curl.

The language of the auction alone makes me think fake.."looks like gold but is not i scan the coin and looks better the color". Sounds like someone used a chinese to english litteral translation. The location says america, that could be a cousins address. I also think just looking at it something is off - the side by side pictures posted makes it more obvious.

Typical cruddy Chinese forgery. The CFe group has been reporting this one since Toad posted it on 11/21, but eBay has done nothing as yet. Maybe they'll pay attention to reports from the C.T. crew!

 

That's right, but the thing that really says it's not a counterfeit is that the seller doesn't say what it is. It's not purported to be anything other than a 1796 silver. As it is, it's not even reportable to ebay as a fraud.

 

Yeah, definitely a fake. Doesn't the presence of a rim alone scream fake? Shouldn't these coins have denticles all the way to the edge of the coin because they weren't struck in a collar?

 

I'll say it's a weird Liberty cap, for starters THERE"S NO CAP!

There's no doubt this is a fake, but for those of you who condemned it because there was no denomination, or the positioning of the hair and LIBERTY etc need to learn more about the early coinage before you start judging counterfeits among them. Unless you are comparing two pieces of the same variety you can't use differences in placement of the design elements to condemn it unless you can show that the position does not match any of the known genuine varieties. (Even then there is always the extremely small chance that it is a new variety.)
