i'm curious, why do people buy rolls of coins...besides the fact that they have a ton of laundry to do? but seriously, i'd like to know what a person gets out of having a roll of the exact same coin? and how many coins come in a roll?
Some of us buy rolls of coins from the bank to search. What are we searching for? Old coins, silver coins, error coins, etc. If you mean buying rolls from the mint, like a roll of presidential dollars, some people just collect that way. I don't though. How many coins are in a roll? Quarters, 40. dimes, I think 50, but I'm not sure. nickels, 40. Cents, I think 50. I can't remember dollars.
yeah, i was referring to rolls from the mint or wherever when people buy rolls of brand new coins like presidential dollars or sacagawea dollars or whatever. what do people do with the extra coins? or are all the coins included in the collection? to me that's an awful lotta coins.
Correct. Standard roll sizes: Pennies: 50 ($0.50) Nickels: 40 ($2.00) Dimes: 50 ($5.00) Quarters: 40 ($10.00) Half dollars: 20 ($10.00) Small dollars (SBA, Sacagawea, presidential): 25 ($25.00) And for historical curiosity... unlikely you can find banks that stll have these: Large dollars (Ike and earlier): 20 ($20.00) Boxes worth depend on the company that boxed them. 50 rolls to a box is pretty common with a lot of armored car companies. Half dollars often come in boxes of 50 rolls (1000 total coins, $500.) I've also seen boxes of pennies with 50 rolls in them (2500 total coins, $25.)
Some people just save the entire roll as a collectible in its own right. Some break the roll open to look for errors and varieties and such, or just the highest grades they can find. I usually don't buy rolls from the Mint except for the half dollars. I break them open, save one of each mintmark for my collection (the best one of each I can find), sell whatever friends and family members want, then spend the rest. President dollars and state quarters I get for face value from the Denver Mint's gift shop. Usually get the equivalent of a roll's worth when a new one comes out. Again, I just save one of each for my collection, sell whatever people have interest in, then spend the rest. I rarely have the cashflow to go to a bank and search through boxes, but I did once... went through $500 worth of half dollars. In that box, found 5 40% silver ones, and a few post-2001 ones (that were never issued for general circulation). Some people have better luck and strike silver, even finding things like Franklins, walkers, etc. Your mileage may vary. The ones I didn't keep, I spent a few (it's fun seeing the reactions of people who have rarely, sometimes never, seen half dollars!), most I deposited to a different branch of my bank.
