What a lot of you seem to miss is that colored coins will attract new people to the hobby quite often youngsters so it can be a good thing also if people like them what is wrong in buying them? 'Nothing' in my opinion we shoudnt be so elitist in our outlook, I have heard time and time again 'Oh we shoudnt change the design of coins' or holographics are wrong well sorry but they are not it adds another layer of interest to the hobby For example I have just bought two coins from Somalia in the shape of motor bikes why because I liked them, they will not form a important part of my collection but they will be a talking point when I have visitors, I also have some colored coins and holos but if any one realy looks at my collection I also have some seriouse stuff like Celtic/Roman/Greek etc.
De Orc (Peter I believe?) is right. These kinds of issues can bring new blood into the hobby. What offends me about these types of issues is the high price that these so called newbies have to pay.
i don't personally care for colored coins. to me, they're like medals. i don't care for medals. but some do. and that's ok. those that like colored coins, that's fine. one of the first rules i learned about coin collecting is that there are no rules. that's what i love about this hobby. i'm free to collect whatever i want...whatever appeals to my eye. i used to be drawn to colored coins. never bought any. and now i'm glad i didn't. but, it was the attraction and the desire to know more about coins that helped me get where i am today. and i agree with the poster above me, it may draw people to the hobby, especially kids who are attracted to color.
I quite agree that the prices asked for them are stupid to say the least but then again I think the prices asked for normal coins by the mints round the world is excessive LOL (I live in the UK, Oh and it's Steve Peter is the owner of the site LOL) The Canadiens have for a few years now been issuing colored 25c coins in folders that are aimed at kids and that I applaud, here are a couble in my collection.
Eww... wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole. That's just my personal preference though; collect what you like.
colored quarters in change I made a purchase at Valley Coin in Shelton Connecticut (nice coin shop & dealer for the local area). The change for my purchase included some colored quarters like you have depicted. That evening I needed to decide whether to spend them or put them in 2x2s. What would you do with them? Very best regards, collect89
I don't like them. Someone gave me a colored silver eagle a few years ago. I wish it had been a regular one, but oh well. As a freebie, I don't mind
they are so ugly! I've always hated them. I remember at one of many coin shows I've been to, a few years ago, they were offering a 1907 high relief colorized St. Gaudens Double Eagle. That made me want to cry, ruining one of the most artistically wonderful pieces in our nations history. that was the worst. I wish I had taken a photo.
Oh...my...God... That's...that's...awfull, terrible, dreadful, it's barbarism. It makes me wanna cry. You should have confiscated it
The colorized state quarters are hideous but as a lover of rainbow toned coins, I don't see anything wrong with the mint adding color to coins. The US has not done it so far, but Canada loves it. I like many of the Canadian colorized coins and enameled coins. And for those that think color wont look good on gold, take a look at this Canadian Beauty. http://cgi.ebay.com/2006-CANADA-300-00-GOLD-COIN-ENAMEL-QUEEN-80TH-BDAY_W0QQitemZ170039427169QQihZ007QQcategoryZ3379QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247 If the US would start minting coins like this, I would become interested in moderns.
how will this type of coloring go after many years? will it peel off or something? how do colored coins age, i mean?
That's not beautiful, it's trash. It looks like something a redneck would do to a coin. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turns out a redneck is in charge of the canadian mint And please don`t be too offended by my remark
Since I do not collect Canadian coins very actively, and certainly do not aim at having a "complete" collection of, say, their 25c coins, I agree. Problem is, the very same coins may well deter others who do collect them all. So is the volume of new collectors that you win with colorized coins bigger than the number of existing collectors that you alienate and possibly lose this way? In the case of Canada there is also the issue of how many different designs, colored or not, that the RCM puts out every year ... Christian
Maybe we should put a redneck in charge of the US Mint. Anything would be better than the garbage they spew out each year!
