Hi! Would anyone be able to give a second opinion on this rare 89-CC Morgan in the raw? If authentic, I’m in the VF-ballpark... Have only seen the photos and it’s not mine. Thanks!
If it were offered to me I'd pass. Nothing personal - just don't like it's looks. Plus, an 1889 CC not in a TPG slab = why?
Here are the three reverses for 1889 CC. Yours kinda looks like #3. The coin looks genuine. I can’t say for sure about the mintmark
I must agree. Also - look at the S in PLURIBUS compared to grades one. Am I just paranoid or is the thickness on the one in question off?
I think the coin is real, but it looks a bit cleaned up to me. I wouldn't be a buyer at VF money if I were you, especially since there are plenty of coins out there to consider.
It might get a softball market grade. But if it weren’t a key date/mark, it wouldn’t grade. Whoever cleaned it, botched it up something bad, poor thing.
I would go for #3 as well. It looks like the two C’s are leaning a bit backwards. #2 more vertically oriented and #1 a more bold font
I would automatically pass on any 1889cc that was uncertified, and not purchased from an extremely reliable source. There are loads of counterfeits that would fool most collectors.
A little paranoia when it comes to raw, expensive coins is not a bad thing, imo. I don't know Morgans too well, but the lower hair curls on the neck area look granular and "pebbly" to me. I also don't like the look of the 2nd 8 in the date, but again I don't know the series. But I will say that I don't think a competent transfer die forgery can be ruled out from the images. I would stick to a certified example.
The letters look at little "fat" to me. The overall look says genuine, but the details leave me wondering. Whatever it is, it has been cleaned, lightly smoothed and artificially retoned. Therefore, even if the TPG says genuine, it won't get a grade.
My father left my brother and me some Morgans. I got out 20 Raw coins and 5 graded coins. I got an 1880 S, MS 64, 1881 s, NGC MS 63, and a "Wild West Set" with 1882 CC, 1883 CC, and 1884 CC.. all NGC MS 65. I like them all, even the Raw coins I got. He must have been watching TV shopping because I got 10 1921 BU coins.
Looks like an authentic VAM 5. What's the bit on the obverse close-up picture in the field between the 3rd and 5th right stars? It isn't on the other obverse picture, so I hope it's just a chip of plastic and not a gouge on the coin.
I looks so real but I too question light cleaning, the letters, and mint mark. I really hope I am wrong I like it a lot. Best of luck.
Harshly cleaned, in my opinion. Totally wrong look. I've got a F15 with CAC that has the perfect look for a well-circulated 89-CC. As for the grade, I would say VF20.
