I deal with a lot of late medieval Spanish coins. I came across this with a large lot of Spanish coins. I believe that it is dated 1654, but that could be when the currency was re-valued. It weighs 1 gram and is 18mm in diameter. Let me know if you have any information on this coin. Thank you!
I don't have information specific to this coin other than to say it is quite crudely made if it was in fact minted in the 1650's. I will also add that most historians agree the Medieval era ended by circa 1450-1485. If it was minted in 1654 then it was actually minted at the end of the Renaissance...most would in fact consider it to be fairly modern.
Obviously it's king whats-his-name on the obverse and a beautiful view of that one famous place on the reverse. But seriously, it looks familiar to me. I'll keep looking. It bugs me because I feel like I should know what it is.
To me, the center part looks like it could be a countermark. The reason it looks familiar to me, I think, is that what is visible of the portrait is similar in appearance to the John of Gaunt series of Conder tokens. It could just be a coincidence that the crowns are similar.
