Quite possibly, they were tying to practise 'social distancing'......I'd have sent the package 'registered'.......

Can't say I'm surprised, given my own experience with incompetent carriers over the years.

I don't understand why anyone would send those items USPS. Isn't there a better way?

Wow. What is that about $45K USD just in the gold melt value? The 2009 20oz Philharmonic coins are beautiful and tough to find. I agree someone knew what was in the package in the system.

Yes, there is. The parties should have just met up as Westport in Connecticut and NYC are not all that far from each other. Sending such valuable coins a short distance like this was not worth the risk.

That's sort of the sender's fault. I mean, they should have put it in a box inside a box inside another box inside again another box and then insured each box.

Seems weird that only 2 of the 3 were missing, and not the 2 most expensive ones. Also one day shipping would have to be express mail. I would think that if somebody was going to steal it, they would either take the whole package, or everything that was in it. Also the package contents would not be marked on the outside, so nobody would know to take THAT package.
Another possibility is it was an inside job, Who took it to the PO to mail? Could the seller have shorted the package himself and retaped it ? Usually when something comes out of a postal package in route, it is marked by the postal service if they retaped or otherwise fixed the package.
Kind of makes me wonder if the weight of the coins didn't split the envelope and 2 fell out. Probably sitting in the mail recovery center somewhere.

I hear nothing but complaining from my old office. Employees and customers have nothing nice to say. Problems have increased and service has dropped. I'm so glad I retired when I did. It's been almost 3 years now and I'm happy.

It's getting worse every day. The new PMG issued orders this week. No OT whatsoever, applies to all crafts. OIC, 204B and all Detail assignments are cancelled and will be no more. No extra or late trucks. If the mail doesn't make the first truck it sits at the plant for the next day. Any mail arriving at the PO later then the DUT or that can't be sorted by the DUT deadline, sits at the office until the next day. If you are down a route, and can't get it delivered without causing OT, it isn't to be delivered. If carriers do not get in by the time the last truck leaves.....that outgoing mail waits for the first truck the next day.

Just to satisfy my curiosity I checked. The driving distance from NYC to Westport, Ct is 52 miles on I95

Can you Register boxes? It's a service that exchanges more hands and receives better care. This has been known to happen with Priority from time to time. Plus if the addresses were really 52 miles apart I'd actually have taken the time to drive there. It's a lot of money to lose.

I agree with toned_morgan that the gold should have been encased in more than one package. I've done this with heavy shipments before (knowing you increase risk of damage with anything heavier than 10 pounds). You can place 6 small flat rates in a medium laying upward, they fit so nicely they don't even move around in the medium.

And I have an example here.. This is how I have shipped some hefty foreign coin lots (some weighing 20-40 lbs.)

I'd like to know how someone can take contents out of here without creating suspicion at the post office.

Other than driving it there no. Things like that and much more valuable things go through the USPS mail all the time. The hope diamond was mailed once as an example. NY is a known hub for theft unfortunately, but even then over 99% of the time the package would have gotten there fine. It just happened to cross the wrong person and get stolen
