This is usually a good mid sized show with a mix of specialty and generalist dealers. I've gone the last few years but am leaning against it this year due to the pandemic and the related fact that Ohio has rising numbers of infections in recent weeks. Anyone planning on attending? Any speculation on what percentage of vendors will be there?
I have said it before and I will say it again, now is unfortunately not the time to be having coin shows.
DeWine posted this yesterday, so I would be extremely weary of attending any large gathering in the Cincinnati area. I’m sure it’ll be even worse in nine days. As others have said before, a coin show is essentially an event where mostly older males (whose health may not be the greatest) mingle and repeatedly handle objects in cardboard or plastic holders (surfaces that coronavirus can supposedly survive on for awhile), so a coin show would be an excellent spreader. If you go, please be very careful.
I really look forward to this show because it is the closest and best show to me of the year, but the risk is not worth it to me so I will be staying home.
The way things are going, I seriously doubt that the Baltimore Whitman show will happen in November. If it does, I doubt it will be the same as it has been and I doubt I will go
I posted a brief one on another forum. Show floor was larger than usual, dealer attendance was down, maybe 50 dealers at most. this allowed the tables to be spaced apart. Attendance by the public was also light. Wearing of a mask was a requirement while on the show floor, and there were several hand sanitizing stations scattered around the floor. We got there at about 10:30 and by 12:30 my father had picked up about a half dozen chinese case pieces (from the 1100 to 1400 era) and had determined that there was no one there with foreign currency so he was ready to go. I had covered about half the floor, and paid Steve Ellsworth a couple thousand on my account. he didn't have anything new I could use in early date cents but he did have some beauties in middle and late dates. (He had just picked up a major late date variety collection with a lot of Condition census material.) I have been considering doing a date set of the late dates in AU and he had a gorgeous 1846, chocolate brown with smooth surfaces. Just the kind of piece I love. He also had a lovely MS-62 1817 N-14 that was just begging to come home with me. So I decided rather than having dad cool his heels for a couple hours while I finished the floor (and yielded to the temptation of the 1817 and 1846.) we had better get out of there, and we left early.
The Cincinnati could very well be a template for coin shows for quite a while now. Thanks for the information. BTW, good to know that your Dad is still chasing down those World coins, particularly Chinese. Dan
Next test coming up for me will be the Show in Columbus (Dublin) OH on Labor day weekend. I did confirm this past weekend that it is still on. Dad is still interested in all the foreign, but the catalogs are so behind now that he can't keep he want list up to date. We have 2 14 inch double row boxes filled with coins dating back to 2013 which still aren't listed in the catalogs. That's about 300 different types.
