I'm pretty sure we can all agree this is almost a monster toned Morgan dollar. In hand, it definitely is... Anyway, guess the grade!
MS-63 I normally do not like the look of toned coins, however, I will make an exception in this case. Love the high points star-like effect and beautiful contrast.
I certainly wonder what these Monster Toners will look like in 100 years when the oxidation has gone terminal. Will all these formerly 4 and 5 figure coins suddenly become black hockey pucks that you can't give away? I guess if I live to 125 I'll let you all know
Look at the ancients that have been around thousands of years that aren't terminal. I think you have your answer.
For every pristine coin there are a hundred that need major cleaning to become presentable. I’m currently working on a Commodus denarius that at first looked bronze, but major cleaning had revealed to be silver. Fortunately I won’t get crucified for cleaning That coin
Makes me sad seeing these coins. Sad because I wasn't smart enough to buy the folders in the 1980s with rolls of these one sided toners in them. I remember seeing Ben Marlenee popping out coin after coin like this. I asked about them, he said, "collectors are only interested in toned coins on both sides". I never questioned him, (he was probably right at the time).
You can still get these toned coins for quite cheap if you know where to look. On ebay, crummy pictures and individual sellers are the things to look for. Also, offers are something that you can abuse if you want a really good deal.
