This is one of the neatest things I've ever seen. Dad's Root Beer Bottle Caps with a Cent encased in them. I have no idea why or how this was started, nor do I know how long it went on for. Dad's Root Beer was started in 1937 and that is the date on this coin. That makes it extra special in my book. This one is dated 1953-D. Not sure if there's any significance in that date.
Awesome. Congratulations on 16K. The 1937 is well circulated. So, it might have been put in later. But, they both look like they were put in with a mechanism made just for that. Very interesting.
Well, if the root beer got on the coin, it would have caused the 1937 penny to look that way because pop is acidic. But it could have been put in later I guess.
Those are very cool! It looks like a machine was used to encase them. The work is too perfect. Congrats on the 16K Likes. ~ Chris
I'm guessing that it was pulled from circulation and cleaned before encasing it in the bottle cap. Maybe a promotion thing as it looks cleaned. I don't really care as it the first year of Dad's Root Beer, it's really neat and the price was very, very low. More than reasonable.
In 1951 my aunt bought a new Pontiac the upper scale with the Indian Head that lit up (Silver Chief or something). The dealer gave her a souvenir. It was Pontiac medallion with a Peace type Silver Dollar in it. On the outer ring it said "Dollar For Dollar You can't Beat A Pontiac". Most of the people she knew that had bought one immediately took the silver dollar out and spent it and threw the medallion in the trash. She kept hers as is. One of our sons has it now. Our #2 to be exact.
Congrats @Collecting Nut on your posts. The bottle cap coin does looks like an advertising gimmick, and you stated. Wonder why more haven't surfaced.
These are the only ones I've ever seen. I've lived in 5 states, travelled to 42 states, stopped in coin shops almost everywhere I've been and I have several online dealers that are very good. Never seen anything like these. The few dealers I've talked to say they've never seen or heard of them. Maybe it wasn't all that popular but I'm glad I own these two.
I assume you have tried to research these, so I won't bother, but it would be nice to know the story behind them.
Congrats on 16k. That's a nice milestone. I've got one of those Dad's Root Beer penny caps, somewhere. You're forcing me to go on a scavenger hunt though. That brings back some memories. If I can locate it do I have your permission to hijack your thread with a pic of it? I'd also love to see the Pontiac silver dollar.
First, please feel free to post your Root Beer Bottle Caps. I hope you find them without to much difficulty. Secondly, I hope we get to see @Inspector43 Pontiac silver Dollar. And lastly, I hope I twisted your arm enough so you do find it! LOL
