Morning everyone, got lucky and was able to get a $50 bag of pennies from the banks coin machine and found this about halfway through with some nice Wheat Pennies. Wanted to see what you thought. I researched quite a bit and just don't have enough experience on whether this is what they call PMD or possibly a die cap error. Penny weighs 2.70 grams which makes me think it is to heavy or very light. As you can see Obverse has little detail and the Reverse is clear. It has a definite rounded or button curve to the Obverse. I can make out they "Y" in liberty and the "1" in the date under the scope and that is about it. Thanks so much in advance and I hope you all have a great weekend.
DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged. An altered Obverse. Not a mint error of any kind. Mr. Ed - Specializing in collection Mint Errors since 1986
Thanks so much, I figured it was because of the weight but didn't want to put in the discard pule until I had someone experienced take a look, appreciate the quick feedback, have a great weekend!
Welcome to CT @projectcom. Due to the fact that the reverse is in pretty good condition, I would say the obverse was purposely damaged by some means, after it left the mint, or as we call it PMD, post mint damage. A capped die errors would show some device details. Check out this site: https://en.mimi.hu/numismatic/cappe... in,be caused by improper storage of the coin.
