I bought this token awhile back as it was a cheap sale and then I found out why! It has rust on the reverse and it's a MF=massive failure! :D I didn't know it was rust when I bought it, I thought it was old scotch tape but I was wrong! I've tried acetone and MS70, the acetone took much of the brown away and now it's a blueish color. I have a bottle of Mint State Restoration, but I'm leery to use it! Any ideas? If I use the MSR, how long do I let it soak for? The prices on these white negress Tokens has gone way up, take a look at feebay and you'll see! Here's a couple of pics, in hand it don't look too bad but pics show everything!

Wow, there are several rust treatments to be found at auto supply stores and hardware stores. As long as you don't scrub with these, it might be worth a try. See what others recommend.

Put it in rubbing alcohol for a little while. Then, take it out and rub it a bit. Then, you can put it in olive oil. Works to clean off rust from iron, I know that. Is that coin iron or steel?

Rodney Cole I do not keep foreign coins.

Rem Oil can be found in most sporting goods departments and sporting goods stores. Quick shot on each side from about 12" and press dry with microfiber cloth on each side for twenty minutes. Do not rub what so ever, this will prevent further oxidation and will loosen any new oxidation.

Not sure what it would do to the coin but I'd be tempted to use Naval Jelly but no longer than 10 minutes.

Okay, here it is! The good news is almost all the rust is gone, I'd say 98% is completely gone! The bad news is the surface is sorry looking! :spitoutdummy: Luckily it didn't cost too much! After I used the Rust remover, I dropped it into VerdiCare for a few minutes. The VerdiCare helped it a lot, as it was looking way worse before! Live and learn, and here's the proof! :D

It's difficult to see with that background but I think it looks better.

Yes, I'm pleased with the reverse, the obverse not so much but that's okay as these coin conservation ideas are a bit of a hit and miss operation!

Since you've gone this far, may I suggest a soak in acetone (or xylene if you have it) and then verdicare again.

Cover the coin with a good shot of acetone, cover the container (shot glasses are great) and leave it overnight. Fish it out and see if it removed some of the color, and you could repeat it. Hope yu can get it good again, I really like it.

If you had the Verdicare you should have used it first. It is designed to remove verdigris from copper and that is most likely what the "rust" was.

Yes, I think I did use it in the very beginning and although it removed some with a Q-tip, it wouldn't remove all of it! I wish I could remember everything I've used on it as something seems to have created a blackness over it, that's being difficult to remove lately.

Okay, here's the finished product! After the acetone treatment, acetone soak for around 20 hours. After the acetone, it was still blackish so I dropped it into vinegar and salt for a couple of minutes. A couple of things I learned was when I first started using products on it I was too inpatient, especially with the verdicare. Next time, I will take my time! I'll probably let it sit for awhile before I try anything else on it, for sure! :D
