I'm confused by this eBay auction: Indian Head Cent

I was cruising through eBay when I came across this auction: https://ebay.us/irMwpk

I have been known from time to time to take a chance and purchasing crimped bank rolls, doing some bank coin roll hunting, and even buying large lots hoping to find something special (spoiler: aside from some minor coin roll hunting wins, I've never EVER gotten anything worthwhile from an eBay auction of "unsearched" coins).

But this one is odd. The end coin is either a rare 1909-S Indian Head Cent, or a semi-key 1908-S Indian Head Cent.

But... this isn't a crimped / shotgun roll. It's a clear plastic tube with an end that unscrews. Can't the seller simply unscrew the end and peek at the coin to see if it's a coin worth $100 or a coin with $500 or more??????

There's no such thing as an unsearched roll being sold on ebay, they're all bs! I mean a miracle could happen but I wouldn't count on it!

 

Yes he could,which means you are going to get a 1908 S, possibly(probably?) with a damaged obv.

 

That's pretty stupid...even for eBay. The other side is probably a carved up love token. On the other hand, the Seller has a 100% rating with 400+ nice reviews...who knows?

It could be a perfectly undamaged fake.

 

I totally agree with Fretboard. I'm not sure what the seller's hook is by showing a clear tube with a twist off top and not laying out all coins? Even with a seller's 100% positive feedback, let the buyer beware as that listing would repel me vs intrigue me.

 

The coin itself looks to be quite authentic. There remains the possibility the S has been added but it looks to have a similar pattern of wear to the rest of the reverse. I would say the cent is likely to be a genuine S-mint and that bidders will bid accordingly for this coin as if it were a nicely circulated 1908-S and consider the rest to be mysterious bonuses.

 

True, and I did consider adding that as a possibility.

 

"A fool and his money are soon parted" and "Caveat Emptor" are axioms I live by. In my opinion, anyone who buys "Unsearched" coin rolls will be disappointed.

 

Is this a get rich scheme?

 

Or the S-Mint could be a counterfeit.

There is no such thing as an unsearched roll, especially when it has a screw top.

It is pretty easy to remove negative feedback on ebay iv'e come to find out many times..

 

Maybe it's the elusive 1877-S that nobody ever heard of.

 

Page is not there. But it's around 100% that coin was not genuine.
Either the coin was a phony, or, if the photo was correct it may have small print that says you will receive a roll "like" the one shown but not actually the one shown, and the photo is to jack up his sales price from suckers.

 

Maybe the screw top is symbolic to whoever buys it.

There are lots of gimmicks on eBay. I've seen this one many times. There was one that had a silver 3 cent piece showing on one end. Wow, what if there are more in there?
