I agree with conder! I think if someone were to drop a tool on the die and make a mark on the die, it would result in a deeper impression and possibly the damage to the mintmark that conder describes.

Remember that the die is an exact opposite of the coin, so raised areas on the coin are depressions in the die.

Being an ex Tool and Die maker I realize how hard it would be for something to fall into the dies MM and chip a piece off , but Dies are hard and brittle it could be a defect in the dies material that just happened to crack in the MM area , I believe Cheryl , as she has the coin in hand , that there is no hit on the coins MM . Also if it was a hit , why is the MM filled in on the right side ?

It loooks to me like something hit the coin at the mint mark & moved (chased) some of the mint mark's metal.

    Very best regards,

    Hi All,

I haven't been in here in awhile...but... The "D"s on the 1979 cents were made with a very worn punch. Most of them look like blobs to begin with.

This one took a hit that moved the metal. You can even see corresponding "creases" on the upper part of the D where the metal shows the effect of being disturbed.

There is never any way to say what did the damage, but it is damage.

    Thanks,
    Bill
