I found a 2001 penny which looks like it has a strong DD reverse but I cant find anything on it. It looks like it would be a Mint State 60+ or better. I put it in a coin folder so that is why you see the shiny area but you can still see the doubling Is it worth anything?
And.. True Doubled Die fall in the Variety category.. not the Error category. Some information https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/1655/Variety-versus-Mint-Error/ and https://www.pcgs.com/News/mint-error-or-die-variety Welcome to CoinTalk
try posting on ebay, seen these and other so-called worthless md and ddd going for from 1.00-4.00 each so there is that..just because others say no value does not mean there are not others who will pay for them
Even if an eBay listing is described accurately as DDD or MD, I hold sellers like that in low regard. As witnessed by the many posts, distinguishing between hub doubling and non-value added doubling can be difficult for new collectors In my opinion I believe most buyers of accurately described MD coins only see the word "doubled", look at the pics, and think that it's the rarer hub doubling. At some point, they will be disappointed when they try to find a buyer. I would put these MD sellers in the same category as gov.mint selling "plated in 24 kt gold, limit 5 per customer" or the TV home shopping coin shysters. They don't say anything false, but they sure don't tell you all the info, which allows them to prey on the uninformed
if people like them, and some people appear to be buying them..i see the term nav as a misnomer , is all, and that, too is my opinion, do not wish to argue...i for one like die cracks, even though they are supposedly worthless as well..and extreme cases od dd, or md, or ddd, or whatever terms given..if there is a lot of overlap i think they look cool, and will not pay ridiculous amounts, but a few dollars here or there for a coin showing doubling that i like , it is what i like..but to call things that do sell worthless....another example is dvd's and cd's many deem them worthless in this streaming free world, yet i sell hundreds every year in my business....every one has an opinion, am just voicing mine..
Again, thank you all for your opinions and points of view. I didn't know much about coins; errors, varieties, etc when I started collecting as a young boy with my mother, we looked more for interesting and mostly wheat pennies; all that went to the side and into storage when I went into service back in '71... yes I'm old, and retired now and starting to look again at what I had stored and what I have collected in a penny jar over the years so I appreciate comments and knowledge. With that said can someone tell me a little about penny weights? I've researched and found out what pennies should weigh but I'm interested in knowing more about weight variations. I.e. I found a 1962 D penny in what appears to be about AU condition that weighs @3.31 grams, is that unusual?
As stated above, it is MD. In future posts, be sure to post full images of both sides along with a close-up of the area you have a question about. It helps members provide better advice...Welcome to CT...Spark
Not really...just struck on a thick rolled planchet...slightly out of tolerance but NAV, no added value. Get yourself a Yeoman Red Book, it has all this type information...Spark
