View attachment 1142045 What is going on with this mint mark? I'm thinking an OMM of some sort. Let me know what you think? Apologies before hand with the close up pics of the MM
Have you compared it here? http://www.varietyvista.com/09b WQ Vol 2/RPMs 1976-D.htm http://doubleddie.com/1237787.html#top
FWIW, I think your pix are pretty decent. I can't help you on the question of a possible OMM, however. That's not my area. I can see why your thoughts would be going in that direction, however. It's certainly a strange looking mintmark.
Ive been comparing MM between these two quarters. They seem to have the same MM style and I agree with you on the MM being filled. However, what has my attention is the extra material to the south of the filled D. I am not seeing any circulation damage to the MM
The scratches on both MM appear to be the same to me and not PMD. They are nearly identical besides the extra material on one
A filled MM is caused by a die chip. I think your odd looking MM with the step was cause by a Die Chip bigger than the MM.
I'm thankful everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable here on this forum.. For a newbie like myself there is alot of info to take in and I thought I had found something special so thanks again for your guidance, I'll spend the quarter since its not worth saving.....
@Jacobr0808 It takes a while so don't get discouraged. This is my 50th year of actively collecting and studying numismatics and I'm still learning stuff. Keep studying and reading about the minting process. Buy a copy of "A Guide Book of United States Coins". The price guide isn't that good, but it's filled with lots of other information. Look at the links to sites on error coins like doubleddie.com, varityvista.com, and error-reference.com. And stay away from YouTube (too much clickbait and misinformation masquerading as helpful collecting sites). Best of Luck
Errors are a fascinating group of coins. If you're watching uTube, forget it. Buy a good coin book and read up on them. It takes time to learn and after 60 years of collecting I still learn and make mistakes.
