If any of you want to see some REAL stuff to argue about i recommend visiting ("certain seedy imageboards") and wallowing in the hellish inferno of anonymous soul-scorching vitriol and hatred for a few days. If your comparatively rather delicate collective sensibilities aren't shattered and you don't immediately drop dead from the shock of it all, it serves as both the crucible through which true backbone is forged and boot camp where ones ability to debate real-time in the middle of a chaotic intellectual warzone is nourished and strengthened. And since it's anonymous, one is required to have the strongest facts and arguments as one can't rest upon personal reputation, dusty sheepskins and popularity to harvest "likes" as a proxy for determining who "won" over there.

As such, this here was like naptime during kindergarten, hilariously sensitive all around, though obviously many were pulling punches out of politeness or decency. Consensus-driven, generally pseudointellectual pearl-clutchers, emotional thinkers, rubes and crass trolls alike all get eaten alive by the true pros. Consensus =/= fact or reality, and as quoted earlier the intelligent among us know which battles to choose and which individuals or ideas are to be ignored or nurtured.

I'm not calling anyone out specifically, but seeing the debate performance of a bunch of comfortable boomers here compared to the titanium backbones and razor-sharp wit and logic of unemployed 20 year old imageboard nerds I felt compelled to pause my self-imposed cross-forum vacation to address it and have a chuckle at the lot of ya! :wacky:

Anyway I hope you're all actively protecting your assets/wealth, staying healthy active and nutritionally balanced, and also preparing for the coming winter with wisdom and foresight as the virus ordeal alone is just the tip of the iceberg of nonsense we'll all be forced to go through. It's the eye of the storm friends, don't get complacent please because I hope to see y'all on the other side and resume sharing and discussing our lovely treasures (no good coins lately but I've lucked upon more nice antiquities).

Please try to steel yourselves because the coming horrors will make all this petty squabbling look like paradise in comparison. "They" want us disunited and distracted, busy fighting over trivialities when we need more unity and community than ever before! Choose your battles wisely friends because an existential war is coming. That said, I don't honestly have much hope for my fellow man so my absence from the internet has been spent stocking up and fortifying my castle, family, body and soul against what's yet to pass.

Good luck everyone, this transcends petty politics and personality differences. I can't help but weep for all the beautiful people who don't deserve the debasement, destitution and horrors that are inevitable. The scariest stuff I've ever seen is coming down the pike now and no one will emerge unscathed. I love you all and pray we meet again in peace and prosperity on the other side. Please be strong and good to each other, we need it now more than ever.:(

Plumbata, I know you mean well, but that site has been linked to all sorts of filth, including illegal material of the very worst, most depraved, and certainly illegal sort, and I do mean worst and most depraved and certainly illegal. It is about the last place on the internet that should be promoted here on CoinTalk's forums. Please remove it at once.

If you don't wish to take my word for it, please see under "Controversies" in the site's Wikipedia entries. Not all of them are equally controversial, so if you see some and you think, "that's not so bad," please keep reading. I would also strongly recommend revising your opinion of that site. It should not be held up as a beacon of anything.

Thank you very much for your consideration of this request.

Last update: I added the above sentence as an edit, with the intention of simply not beginning yet another point of discussion. I am grateful to the person who removed the site name and link from the comment, but since it has already generated some discussion, I will leave my post up as is.

This isn't an occasion to be glib. I will have nothing further to say on this subject to you or anyone else; everything that needed to be said is in my original comment.

Because suggesting that people here might not want to visit an openly neo-Nazi website, in which the intellectual level of the discourse is so high that every other post uses the "n" word, Pepe the Frog and holocaust denial (or, alternatively, cheerleading) run rampant, and just about everyone believes in conspiracy theories under which the you-know-whos control the world, is exactly the same as the original Nazi government -- not that there's a real difference from neo-Nazis, other than power -- confiscating and burning "Jewish" books. Typical Alice in Wonderland logic of conspiracy theorists. All I can say is that the more people post about places like that, no matter their high opinion of the debating skills of its denizens, the more disturbing it is. I've spent the last 35+ years debating Holocaust deniers, and I'm afraid that the logic (or absence thereof) and rhetoric of Covid-19 deniers and conspiracists are remarkably similar. I've also had a 35+ year career arguing for a living, with great success, against the most talented attorneys in the country. So the idea that anything other than the rules here (and the fact that I have more interesting things to do) constrains me from truly engaging with all this nonsense, or that I'm afraid of or unfamiliar with people like that, is completely misplaced.

I've browsed that cesspool of the internet for 10 years and have seen horrors not even posted up on that Wikipedia entry, believe me I'm aware of the true evil as well as the true good that's come from there. I wasn't joking that some of you would not possess the fortitude to handle it. I'm not promoting it, not per-se, but if you want to build a real backbone and actually fight true evil and ignorance that is the battlefield to be swinging in, not a coin forum or relatively tame politics forum either for that matter. I go there to exercise my brain and fight the evil, not promote it, but will remove the imageboard link to protect the sensibilities of people who really have no understanding of the place.

To put it differently, you accomplish nothing by basically regurgitating consensus among like minds, you only grow by butting heads with those with very different opinions in a format where the individual is nothing and arguments alone must hold their own.

Anyway, I love you all and hope you stay safe everyone!

@Plumbata, I edited my post to remove references to you after reading your clarification explaining that you don't support that website. See above. It truly wasn't clear from your original post.

Okay, there's "finding a surprising thread in the Ancients section", and then there's "finding a thread where @GDJMSP appeals to the number of LIKEs a post has accumulated as an indication of the post's merit".

I guess I can close my browser and go do something else. I've clearly reached the end of the Internet.

I apologize Donna for not being more clear, I'll edit as well. Basically what I was trying to convey is that the fiasco precipitated here by someone with an unpopular opinion plays out very differently in a completely anonymous forum where TRUE evil exists openly. Y'all would completely ignore the fella with a random unpopular opinion and instead focus energy on more important matters like solving murders/violent crimes, building evidence and researching important underreported issues like the 3 gorges dam for example, or the coronavirus back in January when they were months ahead of the MSM in understanding and data aggregation and were ringing the alarm for months while everyone else hardly knew what was going on. Yes there's evil to be fought there but also much good that gets accomplished. It my be an ugly place, but war is ugly and that site is one of the most important cultural battlefields in the world whether anyone likes it or not. Shut the site down and the evil goes underground and becomes way way harder to counter. Hope that makes sense.

Plumbata, now that the link and name of the site in question has been removed, I can respond more fully. (If you removed the link, I thank you. If it was a moderator, then I thank the moderator.)

In any case, I salute your fight against evil, and I agree with you that the site we have been discussing, even while I truly abhor it and the popularity it has, is (very sadly!) a culturally-significant site for many Americans. I would disagree about the average level of discourse there, though. I also see it less as a battleground and more as a spawning place.

The thing is, though, when I come to the coin forums here, I am not looking to participate in a great cultural war against the forces of darkness and chaos. I'm not looking to slay any dragons. I already try to do my part by participating in political discussions in a much better environment on a mainstream site with a far higher level of discourse and no illegal material. And even there, I've begun to see that most people are partisans who are incapable of changing their minds. I still think political debate is absolutely worthwhile, and important--and even necessary--but I have lowered my expectation of what is possible in terms of changing people's minds.

To sum up, when I come to CoinTalk, I'm not looking to upgrade my debating skills here. I just want to enjoy coins and discussion about them, which is what this site is actually for.

Anyway, love is always good, and I know you posted with the best of intentions. So I return those good intentions and wish you safety and success in your endeavours.
