1887 MS63??!! Even with the CAC that is like a $60 coin. Damn these guys.

This one is a bit more puzzling than usual. The holder looks fine and the coin looks ok too. It also is verified at CAC. The pictures are juiced (I've seen that seller do it on other Morgans).
One of my guesses is that it was sent for reholdering along with another coin and the certs were switched up.

The spelling mistake I've seen before on others. For example, see this one sold at Heritage:

Interesting- this one matches the NGC cert while the one I posted does not...

 

@Jack D. Young is there anything about the MS 63 coin that sticks out as fake or could it have been a grading room mix-up of the two different coins?

 

It is possible- would have required issuing the same cert number twice for two different coins and spelling Treasury correctly once and not the second time. I have asked my contact at the TPG.

 

These are all stupid looking fakes. The coins. The holders are close, but off.

And then you get the person adding the label to the slab either rushing or falling asleep. I sent this set to NGC. Good news, they both certified and graded PR 70, bad news, the labels were switched. I notified NGC and they really tried hard to get me to send them back. They have an honored position in my collection of Apollo II coins

 

I emailed a coin buyer at Heritage with their link to the auction. He's in world coins as am I but may know quite a bit about US. He emailed back says that NGC "probably deliberately mis-spelled Treasury to "TRESURY" as a way to save space on the holder".

I'll email NGC and complain about this more.

Still others here write them and insist that they try to spell things consistently correctly as a way of differentiating themselves from the Chinese. Wait! You don't suppose they're employing Chinese at NGC and that's why the spelling may be off?

Well that at least lets Heritage off the hook...

It's just one of those mechanical errors that someone didn't catch (like when it says 50c for a Quarter).

I certainly wouldn't just assume in the future that a label mistake (like spelling or year or denomination) is an indication of a fake slab.

 

Their holders are made in China...

 

Happy 4th! Needed to show one of the latest; apparently the counterfeiters got their inspiration from a genuine eBay sale.

No images or auction reference on the on-line cert I was still able to find the genuine example for the cert previously sold on the Bay:



Comparison images of the obv slabs shows plenty of red flags...

 

So sad.

 

This is why it would benefit PCGS to have pictures of all the coins they grade.


It makes PCGS unfortunately look like they're incompetent to someone who isn't up to date on forgeries or over graded real coins in fake slabs.

Would anyone trust a company that would grade a horrible looking coin like the one in the picture EX 40? I wouldn't bid one cent on it.

 

Because they figure there's a chance that, sooner or later, they'll be able to crack it out and get it into an AU55 slab.

 

I love when people do this I wouldn't even bid face value chest pounding to try and tear something down

 

Wow! This thread is the very definition of "no good deed goes unpunished." Typecoin starts a thread to get people thinking about something we all know is a threat to collectors and a potential existential threat to our hobby, then he gets to spend 21 pages defending himself first from a PCGS fanboi who is upset at the thought that his Collectors Universe, Inc. stock might go down a bit if PCGS agrees to eat the cost of adding photos to its security protocol to bring it in line with the competition, then from a troll who seizes on the one word "epidemic" and spends 10 pages trying to prosecute Type's use of that single word as if he committed a capital offense.

As I said, "no good deed goes unpunished." One counterfeit slab and/or coin unintentionally ending up in one of our collections is one too many. Thank you Typecoin for fighting the good fight.
