    Hello,

Please, anyone care to give a grade to this 31-S cent? Thank you all. 1931-SObv.jpg 1931-SRev.jpg

Photos aren't that great but based on them I'd guess XF 40-45. Lighting from both sides may produce better photos so the details can be seen more clearly. :)
EDIT. Also, take the coin out of the holder for better pics.

I will try for better lighting, as you say. The coin was not in a holder.... Thanks!

Sorry, I thought the little spots on the coin was from the cardboard in 2x2's. That and the white background made it look like it.

I can see how you'd think this. It is just laying on the insert. I'll have to find that one again and take a better look.

Thank you Idhair for the generous grading.

It's a difficult task to find a roughed up brown 31-S. Even moreso with the 55-S, since so many rolls were horded. While CRH, I actually get a bit giddy when stumbling across the rare non-MS 55-S. I know a fellow who has over 700 unc 55-S rolls. His great great great grandson may cash in big on those rascals one day. Anyway, not a bad 31-S you have there, Rosethe.

Only approximately 40MM minted for San Francisco's last Lincoln wheat cent run. People gobbled up unc rolls by the armful. A very well struck coin. MS 66's for this year are not hard to come by. Most are beatiful examples, Rosethe. Maybe some 55-S rolls were sprung into the wild during our recent crisis? CRH be on the lookout.

I tend to agree with Idhair, XF-AU, hard to see the wear.

Edit: I can't delete posts and just saw that's your Pops in the pic..;)

I wish my Father were around to experience Coin Talk, computers, Ebay etc. It would have given him so much enjoyment to talk about coins with people. It just didn't exist back then. I remember going to coin shows with him when I was a child. I had no idea how extensive his collection was/is. He's been gone almost 20 years now, hard to believe. I'm just trying to do the right thing with his collection.

If this coin was mine, I would give it a few acetone baths and image it again. Next would be a nice fresh holder. Fun date with lots of history.

Thanks Idhair, how does one go about doing the acetone baths? I use acetone in my profession, I've got the gallon. How long in the bath? How do you remove it? Or let it evap off?
What is the history with that date? I have so much to learn, I can't get up-to-speed on absolutely everything....yet...

Don't use acetone. Just put it in a holder to protect it. I thought you knew the process.

@rosethe Go to the top right of the page and in the search bar type in, Proper use of acetone. Be sure to unclick the check mark on this forum only.
