Hello, Im hoping to get some advise regarding a Mexico 1776-Mo FM 8reales coin i have. I believe it to be authentic but im extremely new to this. Can you tell me anything about it? I have done a bit of research myself, but dont know its worth, what sort of erosion/wear its had ect. Any advice would be appreciated. Many Thanks
The coin's surface looks really 'funny'!Don't think it's genuine! What's the weight? Is is even silver?
It could be a saltwater or shipwreck find. Having the precise weight and doing the silver ring test will help to determine whether it is likely authentic or not overall. What is the provenance of the coin? That is, where did you acquire it from?
I'm going to say fake. CIII was known for his nose... https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15059.html
I see. Here is another idea. Perhaps it is a contemporary counterfeit which was originally coated in silver wash that has since largely worn away.
As i said, im new to this so not sure if iv tested right, but the coin is high pitched and weighs just under a gram.
Aluminum is lighter per unit volume than silver of course, but only by a factor of three or four, not 27. Teri, are you sure about that weight? Having said that, I’m as dubious about authenticity as anyone here. Finally, I think we’re all assuming the diameter of this coin is around 38 mm. If it’s significantly smaller then all bets are off.
Im not sure about the weight at all if im honest. Am i correct in thinking digital scales are used to find the weight of a coin?
Yes, but you can get an approximation with a popsicle stick, two rubber bands, a pen, a modern cent, and some nickels. Mark the center of the popsicle stick. US Nickels weigh 5g each. US Cents 1983 and later weight 2.5g. Pile up 5 nickels and 1 cent on one side of the popsicle stick, the suspect coin in the other. Hold them in place with the rubber bands (rubber bands are bad for long term storage, for a couple of minutes it's OK) Put the assemblage on the pen with the centerline aligned. Whichever side is heavier will go to the ground. Just like the teeter-totter in kindergarten playground. If you have two pre 1982 cents (3.11g each), you can use 4 nickels (20g) plus two cents (6.22). Etc.
