I waited until I came across another penny like this--same year same detail---I tried to buy it but he wouldn't sell--why bring a.coin to a coin show and not sell it??Keep it home--what catches my attention is the LIBERTY and the last 2 zero in 2000 and on the reverse the 2 vase(are those really vases by the memorial steps? The coin has no rim --it just sinks in at the edges--make me wonder if there is 2 there might be more. One curious note ( There is something sticking out of Lincoln's ear.Hopefully pcgs can lend their expertise and solve this mystery
Wow ! I hope you didn't spend cash to send this coin to PCGS. This is the problem with these copper plated zinc cents. The thin copper plating get's damaged easily and exposes the zinc core then the zinc starts to rot. PCGS will not be able to do anything with it because of the damage and zinc rot. I hate to tell you this because you are my friend.
The liberty on the coin is pressed in that doesn't happen by accident and the fact I seen another with the exact look. Thanks rascal I appreciate you.
I always like talking with you on here and like I have said before I will help you learn any way I can. The reason Liberty looks pressed in is that the super thin copper plating has wore off or been damaged on top of the letters. This has let the zinc rot off and disappear. These zincolns will completely rot away into dust if the copper protection get's damaged and the coin is exposed to the weather.
I like talking to you too--i understand that's why I hate these new pennies. But what I.m say if it zinc rot it would be everywhere not just certain area and that why I send it I.m 100% sure it happened at the mint--look at the last two 0 in 2000-you can see a strike in them--i think that kind of precise''-'by the way rascal pick up a roll of 2020 bat quarters I found 12 errors so far
Well I wish you good luck with your coin and PCGS . I have seen thousands of these rotted zinc cents , some even much more worse than yours. I gave up roll searching quite a while back. I know that small die cracks and die chips are quite common on our newer coins because so many have to be struck the dies get's all beat and banged up. If you can find a really awesome error or variety in a new bank roll there should be lots of the same type coins in the roll.
that's what I did I went to the supermarket and ask for 3 dollar in quarters and they are strict on change right now so after I check them I found a double ear on mother bat so after I did my shopping I put my coins in coinstar and went back to the same cashier and cashed my receipt and found four more-- Well I kept going back to her and now I got 15 but today I started getting older quarters so it was fun while it lasted
DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged I already know what PCGS will tell you. Please let us know the results ASAP!
That cent has been de-plated. It is not an error, and no authentication service will certify it as any kind of mint mistake.
Wow, what a waste of time and money, correction unless it is towards an education. Yet, we do that for free around here. Please post the results.
I appreciate all the comments. The part that got me is the tiny area that got pressed and the fact that after 10 years searching I ran into another one and it was the same year-- Thanks guys --To me you got to be a detective and use common sense and try to figure out how it happened --to me a coin that damage will not show it only on certain letters and everything else is untouch--There is two lines on the last two 0 in 2000--nobody can possibly do that-- Thanks again guys I save a lot of money listening to you all
You'll be surprised.. And I bet you will find more within another 10 years. We are here to help not to lead you astray.
