  1. This is another one of those coins that you go, come on. Is this real or fake. Never seen anything like it.

Looks like the coin was struck through something. It could also be damage but you should wait for Paddy.

Looks to be struck through cloth. I don't have a cent, but I do have a half dollar that was struck through a piece of cloth:

it looks to have been struck thru part of a late stage die cap. This one looks almost as weird as my old struck thru die cap coin I call old ruckus because so many on here said it could not possibly be real.If the part above Lincoln's brow is recessed then it is most likely what I said .

It was struck through cloth. Notice how the pattern is the same on OP's coin as mine.

Yes it does look like some cloth may have been mixed in with whatever had the die clogged. It sure does look like a struck thru coin.

This type or similar cloth. Note the hole size.

I wonder what that type of material is used for in the minting process. Cleaning the gunk from the dies? Just curious.

I believe it's polishing cloth - impregnated with a slightly abrasive powder and the hole keep the dust from building up.

You can buy something similar for sanding drywall - it's called sanding screen.

This abrasive cloth has many uses through-out many different industries.
I think the OP's coin was struck through this type of abrasive cloth and some cotton rag material or a very large piece of debris.

It's called sand screen. Used for drywall work and sometimes auto body repair.
I'm thinking the op coin was struck thru a cleaning rag or emery cloth. Both have been known to be used around a press.

Yep - not any 'wearing' / personal cloth ; that would HARDLY impress within a die / coin press. I think even a microscope would NOT show that , 'cept for a Proof coin.

That 3M stuff (mint maintenance material).

It's Monday. He's hard at work. He had a long day in the park over the weekend prospecting with his detector.
