Here is a nice coin that has an unexpectedly nice portrait (photo certainly is not as nice as actual coin though):

Looks like it has been varnished.

Perhaps these pictures do it better service:

In hand it does not look varnished, though the surface is somewhat reflective; the area in the field to right of George is not waffled or disturbed as in the second picture.

I think the British Honduras coinage is underappreciated; low mintages by almost any standard yet far less expensive than comparable coins from more commonly collected countries (Australia, Canada, etc).

That's indeed a pretty crisp portrait of Georgie5. Where's the other side?

I don't think it's awful. Are these like Canadian large cent sized, or more like British (and Straits, etc) large pennies/cents?

They are more the Canadian Large Cent size...

Varnished or not, it is a very fine detailed coin.

A little acetone would take care of any old varnish, I would imagine?

The strike of the portrait looks to be quite nice, but the MacKennal portrait itself is used on a lot of coinage.

Agreed. 1911 is a good date, not the best but I like the coin which is why I posted.

Okay, I did both sides - LOL - treated with acetone as per suggestions above. I couldn't really tell much difference...Whatcha think?

I noticed they have a ?MS 64 1911 on Ebay right now for 450 USD. That coin seems to be a bit overvalued to me & not as well struck. I think this one lightly cleaned though no hairlines.

Well, if that one on eBay sells, maybe then you're in the catbird seat!
