The one I was thinking of buying when I created this thread fell through. But I finally got one, in higher grade. Bought this PCGS AU53 from David Lawrence in February 2020.
Your original post inspired me to look for one as well. I had forgotten that I picked this one up about a year ago.
I really like both of them. I have dreams of eventually buying one of the Feuchtwanger 3 Cent pieces but that will probably never happen. By the way, the only reason I sent it to ANACS is that I have a buddy that works for them and I knew they would put the attribution on the label.
One of these days I'll find a keeper. This was the most recent one I owned but ended up selling. It was also the only one with CAC that I've had.
I posted my 'Foicht-Wang-Ur' cent in this thread before (in 2018), but that was before it was identified last year as the very rare 3-D Variety, Rarity-7 (12 or less known). To re-cap the story, I bought this at a coin show in Antwerp, Belgium in 1986 in a 20-coin lot of U.S coins for what amounted to about $100 at the time. Paid no attention to it or just forgot about it until I 'rediscovered' it last year. Big surprise for me! 1837 Feuchtwanger Cent. HT-268, Low-120, W-NY-480 Dies 3-D. Rarity-7. German Silver. Reeded Edge. 18.5 mm.
There are some beautiful examples here! If I abandon the rest of my US type set, I might sell some of the coins off to buy one of these. Thank you all for sharing!
I have had several of these and have kept up grading. This is the last one, which is the best I've handled. This one is still raw.
That is such a wonderful example, regardless of variety. With the variety, that makes it quite an incredible and special piece! This is probably the best condition Feuchtwanger I have ever seen. I wonder what it would grade. It looks like a nice 5-G variety.
