Was thumbing through some confederate notes on the bay and found a few that really interested me, just got a book on them ( Confederate Currency) by Pierre Fricke so far its been a great read Trying to keep my purchases certified if possible, with allot of copies out there you do have to be very careful !
I agree. When buying CSA notes one has to remember there is no penalty for counterfeiting them as there would be for US currency. PMG or PCGS are good safe buys.
Remember this: "genuine" CSA Counterfeits can, in some case, be more valuable than the genuine CSA note; however, "counterfeit Counterfeits" are indeed worthless. Always pays to know your dealer and your TPG should you choose to grade the.
There are numerous counterfeits but since there is no penalty for making fake CSA notes the collector must take extra caution.
I haven't run across the reference in the book yet, but know from collecting MPC for years that counterfeiting is part of the hobby especially in CSA notes, have seen many postings related to this issue.
Currency, coins, relics the counterfeiting trade is alive and well. Counterfeiting made many a Chinese citizen a millionaire.
Only buy PMG, PCGS has lost all credibility through this forum and beyond had several top sets in MPC with them, now its all gone Jason Bradford the ex CEO of PCGS has started legacy currency grading, I wouldn't send any of my currency to him on a bet, no population report or registry...what a joke !!
I'm a PMG fan too but PCGS is under new management that's the same PCGS outfit that grades coins. I trust PCGS coin grades and I'd be willing to be they have some rightous currency graders. Things change.
To be a little fair, they have made copies of CSA notes for decades. Many of them were never meant to be counterfeits, just provide cheap history lessons. When I was a kid they used to sell sets cheaply, very clearly stating they were imitations. I doubt most CSA fakes are Chinese, or even made to fool collectors originally. Good books, good dealer, and you are fine. I wouldn't waste TPG money unless a pricey issue.
This post is important. The OP has many of his MPCs in K3B-PCGS holders and many collectors that had these PCGS holders rushed to cross their notes at PMG. Personally, I see nothing wrong with keeping the older PCGS holders. They may have mis-managed their business, but no one disputes their grades. PCGS is now back under the Collectors Universe umbrella with a new holder. I wouldn’t have a problem sending notes to either PMG or PCGS.
Who are you referring to ? Legacy or Gold Shield ? The problem there, is no established population report or registry, have seen only a trickle of certified notes from those TPG,s plus the fact they do not have the respect like PMG shares with collectors And most of the time when available always go certified over raw.
I am looking to build a certified collection not raw, I guess I could by raw and send them in to be certified however that could be a big waste of time as with CSA you never know what your going to get.
If you want a certified set, then buy certified. Plenty around. I was just talking if someone wanted a common $10 or something certification is wasted money if you buy from a good dealer. Tens and tens of thousands of them around, and they are worth as much as the certification fees.
https://forums.collectors.com/ Obviously you are new to this. Why don't you go to https://forums.collectors.com. That will give you an idea of to whom I am referring. Down the page you will find 'US & World Currency forum. The 'former' PCGS, the name leased from Collectors Universe, is not the same PCGS of today. I have heard of Legacy/never Gold Shield so I don't have any idea about them. I use ONLY PMG. You can diss the 'old' PCGS (out of business) but before you complain about the new PCGS I'd read up on PCGS.
New to this..LOL, I have been in the certified community for 30 years and have been around the block more times then I care to mention the over 500 notes that I have certified now are mostly PCGS ( Jason Bradford additions..LOL) but thats changing I have already submitted several to PMG for cross over, the "STINK" that has been put on the PCGS label is in measurable, I have many high value notes that are one of a kinds! and now thanks to Mr. Bradford there is no way to identify them are link them to a population report or registry, i think you answered your own question about the NEW PCGS, PMG has been around for 15 plus years even though I was strictly a PCGS guy for years, its time to put that horse out to pasture !
