Now this isn't something I would personally do to a coin but has anyone seen anything like this before? http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0003.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0004.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0005-1.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0006-1.jpg Yep, a magnet glued to the back of each one. They came in with a collection today and the boss had no interest so I gave the guy a dollar for them. Just thought I'd share them with you all.
For coins that will never be rare why not , they cut out worn common Walkers and Mercs these coins could be melted , better to have them as jewelery or magnets than melted , I guess the question is where do you draw the line as coins that should be treated the best to preserve them and coins you can make jewelry with . rzage
I used to do this all the time and had long forgotten. Thanks for jogging the memory. These make great conversation pieces, especially with foreign coins that you might have left over from a trip abroad. I used to glue magnets onto the backs of Kennedy's. They are nice and big. They sell great at yard sales and flea markets. One guy noticed that I had used a roll of 1964 Kenedy's and offered me $1.00 a piece for them. Thinking he would pull a fast one. I say no thanks, the price is on the back - marked $5.00 each. He did buy 4 after thinking it over.
I have several magnetic coins residing on the reefer right now, ranging from a snarfy looking '43 cent to several Canadian and or French coins.
Cool Andrew. Maybe I should buy some magnets? Man if I ran this by the boss he'd probably have me glueing magnets to coins in the dime box all day! You'll never see a Two Cent Piece on my fridge for sure!
Clembo, it was a good buy for $1. I've seen coins with spikes soldered to the back to use as golf ball markers, but never refrig magnets.
Slightly off topic but i think this kind of falls within the threads perameters. My wife put this 1879 Morgan dollar in our newly poured driveway/back pad last month. She had the guys finish off around it nicely. She emailed me the pic while I was at work. I guess some would think it was a waste of a coin but,I thought it was a very cool & thoughtful surprise.
