If you look at I believe to be star 10 from the photo its hard to tell...as it isn't a full image that star * has been recut look at the S E side notice that who ever doctored this coin wasnt a surgeon as the recut line goes SE past the star. To me cleaning is irrelevant as to the retooling and whizzing of this coin. They completely killed the skin....there nothing natural in fact so porous looking i almost call it a dug coin cleaned re engraved and whizzed ....the problem is the natural skin was effected by what ever the doctor thought he or she could hide.
I see hairlines behind the bust. since the lighting is fairly flat, I would agree with "harshly cleaned."
The right field, particularly appears to have been cleaned, as evidenced by the parallel, nearly vertical scratches. In addition to the re-engraving, those scratches appear to have been smoothed, to some extent, with some intermittent scratches remaining. Based on the photos, the coin appears to have been buried in soil, or some other medium to darken the surface.
??? and what is the evidence of this?? The surface is not dark at all. The coin is NOT whizzed either. Whizzed coins have certain characteristics that need to be present to reach that stage of mechanical abrasion.
First time I've ever noticed scratches extending the grooves of the stars. Can't see any way that could have happened at the mint. In addition to the grainy surfaces and the scratches (I see lots of vertically-oriented disturbances in the right field), there are several pits in the fields. My guess would be that the coin was corroded, most or all the corrosion was scraped off, and the coin's surfaces were re-worked. It also looks kind of stupid to have all the hair re-engraved, and then leave that fold on the top of the cap flat. Now I'm wondering what the reverse looked like...?
Lots of re-engraving in the hair, and a pebbly overall appearance that makes it look chemically treated, though I'm not sue by what. Maybe whizzed as well, but I can't be sure from the photo. Definitely messed with. I would say cleaned but that's not the worst thing about it.
