CaptainMac Gotta Love Those Errors and Varieties!

    Hello everyone,

I'll try to phrase this as best as I can in a brief manner. When determining which variety you have, specifically doubled dies, do the die markers have to be in the same exact location as an example online, such as on Wexler's, or can they be close, but not in the exact same location? Die gouges are where I have seen this most often, not so much with die scratches or cracks. I have come across examples CRH where the coin looks to be a specific variety, but the die markers (die gouges mainly) seem to be slightly off from an example online. Not all of the varieties that I have found, just a select few.

I hope this makes sense in what I am trying to ask.

    Thanks!

They can be close, but the doubled die variety has to come from the exact same die that is listed. So depending on the stage of the die, the doubling can be in different places but should have all the prominent markings as the ones listed. Hope this helps.

Your question makes sense to me but I don't have the answer. Why not write or email John A. Wexler. He usually replies.

You could even ask him to make it a topic in one of his Coin World articles.

Can you explain that? It does not make any sense.

On a die variety they should be in the same place. But they MAY appear to be in a slightly different place do to the angle the image was shot at and if you are looking at it from a different angle.
