Okay, I guess I'm getting carried away as after doing research on the Stone Mountain coin, I ended up going for an Oregon Trails and won the following just now.
@Marshall. For some reason to me the last name looks like Groff. I googled Josie Groff and found one on Ancestry.com but that person isn't the one you're looking for. Maybe you can find more searching "Groff". Just an idea. (Name could also be Robb. People wrote differently back then. e.g. s looked like f, etc.). US Census records go back a long time. Maybe you can begin a search for 1860 or 1870 in the National Archives. I'm kind of lucky living in New York because the Census records are also kept here and you can spend all the time you want searching. I found it easier searching in person rather than online. They also have people that will guide you in your search. If you do search and find something, please share it. Good luck.
I am not a commemorative collector, but I have always really wanted to own this one. Good for you for adding that beauty to your collection!
I overpaid for this 1920-D from an online dealer who has provided me a number of coins that I like. This one, I didn't. It was too shiny in some spots, too dark around the rims, and downright ugly. I put it on my desk to send back, but I dithered too long and let the return period expire. This coin lived in an old SEGS holder and looked both cleaned and tarnished. However, it had great sharpness that is really hard to find in this year's Denver production. Here is the vendor's photo. Close up, the area around the rims looked much worse. It was very dark and I worried that it was permanently stained, corroded, or terminally toned. Fortunately, terminal toning is associated more with silver than with copper, so I decided to see what I could do to make this coin acceptable. Here is what I started with. Again, these are vendor photos, which I rotated, cropped, and resized. (This is a vendor whose photos are actually very good.) I started with the usual sequence of distilled water, then 100% acetone, then xylene. Then I used Verdicare. Verdicare has mild detergent properties, so I liberally put several drops on the surface, then soaked a cotton swab in it and started gently working it around the dirty rims and surface spots. (Be careful not to let the coin get dry, and make sure you don't pick up any grit that you rub around with the cotton!! You do not want to scratch it.) I gently removed any excess Verdicare and then did everything all over again. Here is the result.
Yes, yet another online purchase. Damned coronavirus. I don't have many true error coins and wanted to add one to my collection so here it is.
If you like doing research on your coins, this may help; There's more information on this in the ANA edition of The E-Sylum.
Walkers were very popular 50-70 years ago. They were so much prettier than either Franklins or Kennedys and were still readily available.
I promise this is the NEXT to last time I'll post this coin. Probably sending her to NCS to preserve the surfaces and remove a little verdigris.
This is one I think they back into. I think they discounted for Die State weakness at the fraction, E and OF which they shouldn't have done to back into EAC grading standards which I estimate at 12. But they didn't net grade it or give it a details grade. You may run into the same thing with weakness at OF.
Someone I trust is urging me to leave it alone and just send it to PCGS then CAC. They think it'll be rewarded for it's originality at both services.
I have to admit I'm not a fan of any TPGs, but PCGS seems to be better than the rest. I have 18 entombed Coins. 13 PCGS - 1 error S-45 Labeled Head of 94 S-82 Labeled Liberty Cap S-94 Labeled Reverse of 94 - It's a Reverse of 97 S-95 Labeled Reverse of 95 1796 NC-4 Labeled S-NC-4 and Reverse of 95 1797 NC-5 Labeled Holed, S-NC-5 and Reverse of 97 1797 NC-5 Labeled S-NC-5 and Reverse of 97 S-146 Labeled 1st Hairstyle S-185 Labeled 2nd Hairstyle S-191 Straight Grade G4 1800 NC-3 S-229 Straight Grade VG10 1847 Hawaii Cent 1 NGC S-191 Straight Grade F12 1 NCS S-210 Labeled S-210 1 ANACS S-95 Labeled Draped Bust 1 SEGS - 1 error S-209 Labeled S-215 1 ICG 1883 Hawaii Dime - Straight Grade XF40
