This coin is the pinnacle of my collection; the piece I am most proud of owning. I purchased it in early March of this year to commemorate finishing paying off my undergrad student loans I would've loved one with a bit more luster; however, as CoinFacts notes, 1908s tend to be rare with exceptional luster. The next big purchase I'm saving up for is the 2009 ultra high relief restrike. What do yall think?
I love the 1908. There is no motto on the reverse and I think it makes for a much cleaner look. Sweet St. Gaudens..... I put my bid in at MS64.
I would be more around a 62. Many marks, not a lot of luster. No St Gaudens is bad to own, just being real in my grading OP.
I agree entirely! For my first St.Gauden's (staying optimistic that I'll own more later), I explicitly went for the God-less variety for this reason
Here's a look at my OGH 1908 MS-63 picked up a couple of years ago for $1400. Maybe I'm just seeing things but I think this coin is a bit better than a 63... (At least a CAC sticker, Ya Think?) Opinions Welcome. J.T.
I hope there is something wrong with your camera and not my eyes. In MHO, I see a definite poor strike on the left side on each picture. The Capital Bldg. is barely noticeable and the rays are very weak on the obverse. The reverse Eagle is very strong with no indications of wear, but again the rays are weak on the left side. If it has strong and full luster I would give it MS63. Dave
PCGS TrueView image. ~5,700 x 2,900 pixels. Edit - oops; @Mojavedave might've meant @J.T. Parker; not me
Hello Dave, Thanks for your posts and please take another look at the re-adjusted pics as the ones posted were darker than they should have been. (LOL! Thanks Rheingold, I'd trade that gold-bean for a CAC sticker.) J.T.
HA! I made the thread and the original images are not the same coin JT Parker posted; they were simply adding an image of their coin for comparison. The grade of my St.Gauden's in the original post is still up for guesses.
Not to be a party pooper, but aren't those wear marks on the eagle's wings (and elsewhere)...? Or are we back to the old cabinet friction debate? Not trying to be "that guy"... just trying to brush off my grading skills on a series I have not looked at in a while...
I'm a huge fan of TrueView, but this is an example of where the coin in hand looks significantly better and brighter than their pictures. Here are photos snapped with my phone with only natural sunlight.
