I have a United Nations 25th Anniversary Commemorative coin. It says that it was minted at the Franklin Mint, but I domn't recognize that. I would like more information about this coin, and what it is worth. Thanks.
The Franklin Mint likes to sell stuff like this. You know the pitch: ...limited quantity ...only 5 per household ...certificate of authenticity with every order ...only $6.95 S&H ...operators standing by ...order right now and we will throw in this nice plastic case They sell a bunch of stuff. Their marketing is almost as good as the guys on Coin Vault and other Home Shopping channels. See them at: http://www.franklinmint.com/ I don't know if there is any value in your coin. Edited Good luck!
They actually made a wide variety of UN medals. Most are 18 pennyweight of sterling silver. (.9 troy OZ .925 silver). The most common had a mintage of around 25,000. Most of the FM coins, tokens, and medals were of very high quality and were done with excellent artistry by well known sculptors and artists. They made many thousands of different coins for many countries and large numbers of medals in copper, silver, and gold. They opened in about 1963 in Pennsylvania and the name of the town they were in was changed to Franklin Center in honor of the company. If memory serves much of the equipment from the old Heaton Mint in England ended up at this site. They got out of the numismatic line entirely about 1998. Most of their prices have been extremely high over the years and their products still tend to be unappreciated. Even very low mintage gold coinage tends to bring low prices. There is a growing awareness that some of their products are scarce and quite desirable.
63.55 Large 25th Anniv FM Medal In response to your message below, I have the large FM medal of the 25th anniversary of the UN. It is heavier than my friend's scale will allow. Any place to find it's actual weight? Also, have seen no where these things are being sold. Best to sell for silver value? SJ
