They have been used in several countries. This web page shows several but they come from other countries as well. I don't collect them so I can't be any more specific

There is, or at least was five years ago an organization dedicated to collecting them , the International Telephone Token Association. If it is still around it can be contacted here

The International Telephone Token Association, dedicated to help world wide collectors. It works informally, only via E-Mail. Please contact: Jose Luis Rubio at RUBIOJL@ADINET.COM.UY

Another country not on the earlier list is Zambia. No groove in it though [IMG]

Good thread on the transits. Many of these have a number of minor die variations, and can be difficult to id even with pics and a description of the differences. I have a couple of thousand transits from all over the U.S. Some are still in original rolls, and I have a small collection of the token dispensers that were mounted to one's belt. Coffee's set of transit token references consists of three volumes - The Listings, Die Variations, and History and total nearly 3000 pages.

I used to have one of those for the subway. God, they replaced the tokens with that stupid card and that card sucks.

I took the NY Subway all my life until 1971. I know I've had a few NYC subway tokens stashed away somewhere around but it's been so long since I lived there, I'm not sure where they are. I'll ask my brother who is still in NY to check and save them for me.
I remember the San Francisco tokens I had then and still may have some of them.

Now, I've gotta look for them and post them all.

Well, I guess somebody wants pictures of that L.A.Token here...
All I know about it is I got it from my granpa in a bag with a a bunch of other coins. This was the only token in there.

I think it is either a subway or streetcar token.

It's CA-450J. 16mm white metal and first issued in 1946. These were used for some period of years and there were a few reorders of tokens meaning there are numerous varieties. To my knowledge all the varieties are common.

I can't help much with other information. I believe it was a street railway token but don't know.

This one is not a SUBWAY token, it is a bus token... But, somebody may find it interesting....
