There have been a number of threads about dessicant to lower the humidity for coin storage. I just thought I would pass on something cool I found... EvaDry dessicant. It's rechargeable... just plug it into the wall 120 VAC, let it sit for a while, and use it. I'm not plugging these guys anymore than we plug Airtite or any other product. I've just used 'em and had good success. Here's a google link : http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4RNWN_enUS270US270&q=EvaDry
Here's something else helpful... low $$$ hygrometers to measure humidity so you know how you're doing. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4RNWN_enUS270US270&q=hygrometer Cigar smokers have popularized these things... they use 'em in their humidors.
Sounds like a good idea if you have a place to put the chord , me I'd rather use the sillica gel you can recharge in the oven , no chords no hassles . JMO rzage
But the ones you use don't need electricity from an outlet , right ? It would be hard plugging one in in a safe . rzage:kewl:
Yes, you plug them in to "charge" them up and they last a few weeks or so before I have to charge them up again. And yes Rusty, I do have electricity in my safe.
For what it costs, I can see why Better watch when ya open that door though, that stuff is gonna fly outta there
You don't plug 'em in while they're in the safe. You pull them out of the safe, plug 'em into the wall, leave 'em churnin' and burnin' all night long - just like ya boy Ricky B. Then you put 'em back in the safe.* They have an indicator that changes color to let you know it's time to recharge. * after disconnecting them from the wall :goof:
Golleeeee , What will they come up with next in the big city ?:hail:Joe what have you got your own walk in , mines a teeny 750 lbs. rzage
Amusement : Abe Lincoln used to tell this story... Shortly after the Revolution, hero Ethan Allen toured Britain. They gave him much "good natured" ribbing. They figured they would really get him riled up by placing a portrait of George Washington in the outhouse. Days went by. Then weeks. No reaction. Finally, they could take it no longer. They asked him if he had seen the portrait. He responded "Yes, of course." They asked him what he thought of it. He replied "I think it's the perfect place for it. Nothing makes an Englishman cr*p faster than the sight of General Washington !"
I just noticed they're offering these things with an option for "a fresh new scent" ! Obviously not what we want for coins.
LOL....thanks for sharing a very good story. As for the fresh scent.....might go well in the out house.
Yeah, I saw that.... almost bought it by accident until I noticed that it was the scented one. I went to Gander Mountain the other day and looked at their safes and many of them now come wired for electricity. These safes were trimmed out with lights to illuminate the inside of the safe and have plugs for heat sticks and such. My safe has a hole about the size of a quarter cut out in the back of the safe. Now the fire board is up and you had to punch through that, so I punched a small hole through the fire board and threaded an electric wire through that and hooked up a heat stick. Its all good!
A heat stick ? This is not all good. You do not want heat in your safe. You want your safe to maintain a cool and constantly cool temperature. Heat would be a bad thing.
