Overall I really like this guide...but I feel like they could have found a cleaner example for AU58. It's not the best looking coin and frequently you find AU58s looking like an MS65 with a touch of wear.
AU 58 is the coin grade in Morgans that seems to have the most variability, and slippage based on TPG grading. Since it is the quintessential slider grade, if there is some wear on a coin that is circulation wear, it can have otherwise 64 or 65 surfaces in appearance, but have a slight rub at one or more of the high points, thus making it AU 58. That is why many AU coins look better than noisy, chattery MS coins.
For people that expect a mark free Morgan for it to get gem graded, here is the PCGS rubric for MS 65. To me, this is not the cleanest 65, and I would have guessed lower, but this is PCGS’ photo standard:
I am going 65 on this one the marks we are seeing is it the coin or the case (grey looking) Rim looks excellent!! makes me second guess the marks.
MS-65+. I'll easily overlook the minor obverse bag marks for given the luster and obverse and strike detail. A beautiful specimen by any measure but especially noteworthy coming from the New Orleans mutt mint.
