Picked up this rare little coin at the recent Gorny auction, believed to be the Temple of Dionysos at Philippopolis, and my first coin from this city. PHILIPPOPOLIS. Caracalla, 211 - 217 AD AE ø 17mm (3.86g). Obv .: ΑΥ Κ Μ ΑΥ CΕΥ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙ, draped bust no Rs .: ΦΙΛΙΠ-ΠΟΠΟΛ / ΤΩΝ, tree-covered hill with a temple shown in three-quarter view on the summit. Varbanov, GIC -. RR! Not published in standard references, except Ivan Varbanov's new book (2019) The Coinage of Philippopolis under number XV.49.2. showing 13 specimens. From a South German private collection, Coll. EL; ex Gorny & Mosch auction 200, 2011, lot 2105. Ex Gorny & Mosch auction 271, 2020, lot 340. Would love to see everyone's coins from this great town or your Caracalla coins.
Great add - especially like the panoramic view of the temple on the reverse - here's a Domitian from Philippopolis - with a tough looking Ares. Apparently, Philippopolis, today Plovdiv, Bulgaria, issued its first provincial coins under the reign of Domitian (AD 81–96) in four Roman denominations (sestertius, dupondius, As, and semis). This one the As variety (5.89g, 22mm). This coin most likely issued to celebrate the elevation of the city to the rank of metropolis.[Ref.] Philippopolis, Domitian, Æ 22 or As, AD 88-89. Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XIIII CENS PER P P. Radiate head right Rev: FILIPPOPOLITWN, Ares standing left, holding spear and shield Ref: CoinProject, RPC 353 Specimen #12 (this coin)
Great coin Sulla, well struck with excellant reverse detail, this city certainly minted some nice coins in this era.
Lovely and rare example of a popular ancient site! I must confess the name of the city for whatever reason popped this classic hiphopipotymus into my brain: Wish I'd one to share. Here's a Carrotcake case from the provs: Caracalla Eros riding dolphin

Thanks zumbly I have another from that auction and if I had have known that most were selling cheap I would have bid on a few more, I guess evevyone was spoilt for choice with so many coins and that spread the dollars around.
