Jewelry Scale - Problem

I purchased a new scale via EBay roughly a year ago. I don’t think I’ve been able to get an accurate measurement. I’ve gone through the calibration process a number of times. I’m hoping a member here is familiar with this specific make/model and may be able to tell if the calibration instructions that came with this unit may be missing a step or is incomplete.

After conducting the calibration process, I place a quarter on the scale, but I’m not seeing the correct weight reading for a quarter.

I purchased a small scale from Amos Media and I had a friend of mine at a jewelry store check the calibration on it and after he measured a very small amount of gold, it produced an exact reading as the one they use in the store. He ask me for the address of AMOS media and ordered one to carry in his brief case.

It's displaying ounces on the screen, in the menu choose grammes to 2 decimal places.

 

sorry, pressed post before i was finished. The mini jewellery scales i have default to oz and 1 decimal place each time i turn it on. Have to remember to choose what i need each time. Don't know if yours does the same. And before i weigh anything i use a known weight object and tare the scales.

 

Is it perhaps reporting the weight of that little black weighing pan? Try zeroing the balance and putting just the quarter on it. Then try putting the black weighing pan on it and pressing the zero, then putting the quarter in the weighing pan.

 

BTW, what is your calibration weight you use and did it come with the scale?

 

Are you taring it correctly?

 

It came with 2 50g weights. I put just one of the 50g on the scale during the calibration process but it always weighs in at 100g. I never get the scale to reflect 50g when that one weight is on the scale.

 

I'm not familiar with "taring". What is that? When I go through the calibration process, per instructions included, I have the scale set up like in the first 6 or so pix on this thread. It reads "0". I then place the quarter on the scale and get the readings which are in the second set of 7 or so pix.

 

I calibrated it with the weight pan on the scale. With the weight pan on the scale empty, I get a "0" reading. Once I put the quarter on the scale, I get the readings pictured in the second set of 7 or so pix.

 

I tried it when I first got it but got the same results. I put it away thinking I was doing something incorrect and would sort it out later the next time I get it out. I've gotten it out about three times over the past year or so since purchasing it. I've never had it give me a correct reading with any coins or the supplied calibration weights. That's why I'm thinking the instructions may be missing a calibration step or something.

 

Probably something wrong with the scale then. If you can, return it and get a different one.

 

Just a hypothesis: what if he’s calibrating the scale with a 50g weight when it’s expecting 100g? That would be telling it to read a given weight as twice its actual value - which is what appears to be happening in the last couple of photos.

 

(The scale shows 11.404g. Half that is 5.702, which exceeds the ideal weight of a quarter by about half a percent. I think that’s well within the tolerance range.)

 

Xlrcable is correct, the scale is expecting 100g for calibration, and it should be directly on the scale pan and not in a weighing container. IMO, Jim

Yup, use 100 g instead of 50 g. BTW taring is setting the scale to 0 with a container on it.

 

Are you zeroing (taring) the scale with the tray on it?
I like using an uncirculated 5 cent nickel to verify weight. They weigh 5.00 grams.
