Hello everyone, my father in law had a cloth bag with a few coins in it. Been researching on google to try and identify what country these coins were from. I came across a couple of these coins and I have no idea what to search for on google. Not sure if it is a coin or just a token, can you help? Thank you
Token. A coin is a piece that is issued by a legal entity. It has an official status. It usually has the name of a country or region on it and in more recent times, a stated face value value. The U.S. Government puts a value a face value on its gold and silver bullion coins because that gives them coin status. Without that, they would be "silver or gold rounds" which get treated differently for sales taxes in many states. A token is usually a private issue that might take the place of a coin.
I glanced at The Book but it didn't jump out at me. It is probably a 992 (Minnesota unidentified) and probably Minneapolis. It was probably issued between about 1905 and 1941 and the style suggests it is toward the beginning of this period. They were used in nickelodeons and arcades usually as prizes but sometimes used as "coupons". There are hundreds (even thousands) like this but the type is most commonly associated with Minneapolis. They rarely have much value but there are dozens of collectors and most of us need quite a few of them. I don't believe I have this one.
