I got this coin a few days back in the mail and was bummed by the gouge on the obverse in front of the lips and chin. However it doesn't look like a nick and wondering what caused it, searching on line I found another 88 O with a very similar gouge in the exact same spot so wondering if it happened during minting ? Also there is a rim ding that stands out . this coin is full of luster so things stand out similar to a proof coin. it grades MS-63 by NGC so I guess the ding wasn't big enough to detail it. that gouge though if its not natural I will be bummed
photos of the areas in question are there , will add another reverse picture but that is not the area in question
No before you hit post after you up load images it sez in full you hit that button and they load full.
Forgetaboutit. You posted all that is needed for any numismatist to answer your question. Just ignore those who want to see the EDGE and the 2X2 the coin came in it came with!! Now, that is not a gouge. I'll blow the image up and take a look. There is a brownish color inside the mark. Could be a strike thru or planchet flaw rather than a bagmark.
seller just mentioned its a strike through , would that not make it grade details? it is graded MS-63 or did it just knock it down a grade
Based on the other marks, this may be a deep scrape. There is a shallow scrape on the neck. Scrapes are generally the same depth throughout (see mark on neck). The mark in the field is multi-level. Gouges are deep but vary rarely multi-level. Still see the discoloration so this is one that must be seen in hand to ID. PS Since much of the mark is drawn out with a discoloration inside, it may still be a struck through sawdust used to dry the planchets.
the neck is more of a bag Mark it’s not any kind of nick or anything. This coin has incredible luster so everything sticks out. Neck looks like a coin may of rubbed it
Actually, it is not. Think of it this way. Any mark on a coin that happens after it is struck is PMD. PMD takes all kinds of shapes. A bag mark is just one of them. Bag marks are HITS. Hits are localized. When something comes into contact with the surface over a larger area, it is no longer called a bag mark even though it may have happened in a bag.
That is not a bag mark. Bag marks are dings, or scratchy contact marks. It is too prominent a flaw to be contact in storage. I would think it to be a planchet flaw.
There is nothing on the neck if that’s what your talking about . Just some rubbed luster . This coin has a incredible amount of luster so everything shows the hit in front of the face looks like something struck the coin during minting I think . That hit is pretty deep with little groves in it , it looks like
