Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out. My Domitian As seems to have discoloured in certain areas. When I saw it a few days ago it didn't have these lighter areas. Does anyone have a probable explanation for this and/or suggestions? Your help is appreciated! Here's the before and after pics. Only the obverse has been affected.
I think your coin is just trying to give you that nice white marble statue look I have no actual knowledge on this, just wanted to say it’s a beautiful coin even with this change occurring! Congrats on owning it. I recall another Domitian coin in the last CNG e-auction I was very interested in having also had this similar coloring change- Lot 415. I would add a photo but I have no clue how to do that on this site.
Could just be different lighting, or coin may have been repatinated and the added color is wearing-off.
Did you see the coin in both states or just the photo? The first picture with added contrast looks a lot like the second.
@Carausius I initially thought that too but I always take my photos in the same spot where the lighting is consistent. @dougsmit Yes the last time I saw the coin it looked exactly like the original photo. I haven't looked at it for two days or so and now I'm seeing these blemishes. Even though you increased the exposure the colouration still looks even, not blotchy like it is in my second photo. I'm now wondering if it has anything to do with storage. When I last saw the coin I took it out of its binder because I wanted to move it to another one (I don't stick my coins in flips but rather place them directly in a binder page and seal the opening with tape). In the meantime I had it sitting on a tray.
It's very easy to add a photo to your reply. After you finish writing the reply, next to the Post Reply button is Upload a File. Click on that, find where your photos are saved, click on the one you want, then post reply. I should add, that is if your photos are saved on your device.

The coin will float around in the binder page, and that may have a «polish» effect on the high points. Also, do you know what material the binder page contains? Usually, you have the (hopefully) safe flip between the coin and the page. I prefer a storage system where the coin has no movement and no contact point between the surfaces and storage medium.
I once wont a small lot of coins in an auction. All the coins had been artificially repatinated with something about the consistency of shoe polish wax. I could literally rub it off with my finger. I wonder if that's the case with your coin. The previous owner may have smeared something on it to darken it a bit, and simple handling was enough to remove the darkener from the raised areas.
It may also be an unholy cobination of Ren Wax and the storage solution. Coin looks waxed, which I’m fine with, but the wax can have a polishing effect.
Perhaps you were fondling it while sleepwalking......it was so readily available...probably not the first time someone did that...
While I don’t know the exact name of the material, the binder pages are a soft clear plastic. I’ve noticed that some of the Ae coins get foggy in their slots, but this hasn’t happened with gold or silver. Perhaps I should use flips?
